Why not just stay 4×3? If you want 16×9 why didn’t you shoot 16×9?

[Rafael Amador] “About Toast, it could be fine if you could use it with the MPG-2 encoded with other applications.”

Not tried it with version 9 – but version 8 let you use MPEG2 files encoded using compressor.

October 31, 2008 at 3:45 pm in reply to: Can I load XDCam footage directly into FCP 6?

[Nick Greiner] “My camera is SD only and I’m wondering if I can avoid the Sony plug-in if I shoot in dvcam 25 or even imx 50.”

You still need the plug-in as your DV files are still in a .mxf wrapper. The plugin is needed to convert the .mxf files to .mov files.

Yeah, we had the same problem, and it’s been verified as a problem by Aja. They say it will be fixed in the next driver version. We’ve had to keep 3 of our edit suites on the 5.1 drivers because they wouldn’t take the 6.0.1 versions.

October 17, 2008 at 10:15 am in reply to: Title Safe?

[Chris Borjis] “It’s common here to do the reverse, ignore 16×9 safe and keep 4×3 title safe. “

That must be frustrating. Clip from the BBC guidelines on this issue:

“Commissioning documentation will indicate which protection zones should apply to
programmes. The majority of programmes apply 14:9 protection. Sport is normally 16:9
widescreen protected for 4:3. Unprotected 16:9 is agreed in a very few cases only.”

[Bill Nahlik] “FCP is not importing the proxy files for me to edit.”

Just tried it with some proxy’s here and it works fine… Just dragged them from the cache folder. They were imported using the latest version of the transfer utility though.

Doesn’t choosing the correct easy setup change the output for you automagically? I only ever need to choose an easy setup – never have to bother with the output settings menu…

If you really need to I suppose you could drop the proxies into FCP and edit them, timecode should match up, but you won’t get any realtime…

Just make a sequence and drop one of the proxies onto it and let FCP alter the sequence settings to match. I’m not quite sure how you’d then relink the media though…

October 16, 2008 at 9:12 am in reply to: Title Safe?

Title safe is still super important, but there is a big difference between 16×9 title safe and 4×3 title safe. I’m glad to say that here in the UK we can pretty much ignore 4×3 safe, and for broadcast we can use 14×9 title safe which gives us a wee bit more room…

[Bill Nahlik] “Is it possible to edit XDACM HD proxies transferred via FTP in Final Cut Pro?”

Not really… But why would you want to? It’s way easier to just take and edit the full res files, and drives are cheap!

BTW the most up-to-date version of the XDCAM transfer software is 2.7.1
