May 3, 2007 at 3:12 pm in reply to: Waveform re-draws are killing my minds!

We completely disable the audio waveform and the clip thumbnails. We have gotten used
to work without them (since our old Avid days).

We only enable the audio waveforms when we need accurate edits on beats or do a quick
rubber band mix to then disable it right away.

Personally, I do not undertsand editors using the thumbnails with multiple video tracks.
They have so many tracks that they down size them and can not see the little pics anyway.

All they create is a snail slow system, but hey that is my opinion. If it works for you great!

In California, we get 5.25% off taxes for Post production purchases.
In other words, we only pay 3% tax.

May 2, 2007 at 9:03 pm in reply to: Xraid – used – should I buy it?

As far as the Xserve Raid itself, I would buy it. We have bought some used ones = savings!

They are reliable and very well designed. Apple’s competitors are good as well, but if this is
a good deal for your pocket I’d go for it. Like Russ says, those deals are unusual.

The Xsan is another story… a costly one…

Just like Walter, we also use real time burners with nthe kona cards.
Pioneer (in my opinion) has the best quality RT encoders.

This is the one we use:

    Pioneer DVR-640H-SE
    PAL & NTSC

Nest the clip / sequence and add the dissolve to the new nested clip.
Just like working in AE with pre-compose assets.

[JeremyG] “Sounds like you got it all figured out. My dual 2.0 G5 is in dire need of an upgrade. My Macbook Pro runs circles around it in certain situations”

I hear you. Believe me, my hands itch to go buy new Macs.
So everytime they itch, I just give them a good smack with the biggest hammer I can find. 🙂

B-tree = use DiskWarior or Drive Genius
These are options only. Re-install may be the solution.

    Good Luck!

[JeremyG] “Yeah, it’ll work, but you don’t think you’ll get more performance on the latest greatest computer/graphics card? Really?”

Of Course! But, will the expense be justified? In our case, we would have to buy 5 new Macs
just to get speedier results. Now, if the business and clients demand it. We’ll go get them.

But if the investement doesn’t considerably increase the income, we won’t upgrade right this
moment. The only way to know is to give it at least 3 months.

Best case scenario for us is to do business as usual and upgrade next year. Not counting
May (that is when FCS 2 gets released), there are only 7 more months to go. Give it another
3 months to see how the market does, and we find ourselves 4 months closer to 2008, right
around when new line of Macs should be released from Apple.
