It is so odd, but has anyone noticed that you can’t put a fade on a clip (either using a transition or key framing the opacity) if there is a widescreen mask on it? Why is that? It is so lame.

This is a bug in 5.1. I presume you reported it in feedback. The more users who do the more likely it will be corrected.

Nest the clip / sequence and add the dissolve to the new nested clip.
Just like working in AE with pre-compose assets.

In this instance pre-comping it does not fix the problem. The functionality is broken. It should not work like that. The transition should be downstream of the effect, and works correctly in earlier versions of the application.

You can workaround this by using a four-point garbage matte, or the mask shape filter, or a Photoshop mask, anything but the widescreen filter.

Or, in a pinch, put a slug on the top track and ramp the opacity of the slug to do the fade…kinda old school but…

This is what I do. Quite simple really.

I thought we all did this…

I find it very necessary when you have to fade up with CG at the same time.
