There are a lot of things that you need to consider if you’re building a san. It’s not just the Xserve Raid that you need.

    You’ll also need:
Fibre Switch: $3000-$4000 for a basic one
    Fibre Cards for Computers
XSAN software or other SAN software (1 licence per computer)
A lot of time to learn how to set it up best for your configuration.

In optimal situations, it is best to a computer that no one touches to server as the metadata controller.

As far as used Xserve Raids, we purchased one off ebay for $5600 for 5.6TB. It was a great deal that I haven’t seen too often. It’s been very reliable so far. We also purchased several other items off ebay.

Setting up a SAN for our 4 FCP seeds has been a really life saver, but it does take quite a bit of research and trail an error to really make it work for you.

As far as the Xserve Raid itself, I would buy it. We have bought some used ones = savings!

They are reliable and very well designed. Apple’s competitors are good as well, but if this is
a good deal for your pocket I’d go for it. Like Russ says, those deals are unusual.

The Xsan is another story… a costly one…

This raid is one of the older units. They now come with at least 400gig per drive. There’s nothing wrong with the older one, just know that you’re NOT buying the most recent technology. Ask about home many hours it has been in operation. After about two years of constant use you can plan on starting to replace a drive here and there. Does this come with any spare parts? Apple sells a “spares kit” with spare drives, fans, controllers, etc. You’re going to need some of this eventually.

If the price is right, go for it… but be aware of what you’re buying. IF possible try to observe this raid WORKING before you pay for it.

    Good luck.
