Why were they not covered by their insurance? We have a clause in our policy that covers us because of fraud. Maybe that’s not a normal thing to have. I’ll have to discuss it with my business manager when we wake up tomorrow.

I seriously doubt that very many made a decision to buy FCP based on a trip to NAB. While it’s great to touch, try out and fondle, my buying decisions are usually made ahead of time and NAB is just a chance to confirm my decision.
When we were a Discreet Dealer, Discreet would hold back all of the announcements till NAB (including us) which really screwed us because that kept us from making any sales from around Christmas till April, like a big announcement at NAB would rock the world. it would have been much better if we had the new products in January and made our sales before the big party.
Waiting till NAB to release a new product is idiotic. How would it go over if we all had a birthday party on the same day. So what! With the Internet as rock solid as it is today, what’s the point?
As for cameras, sound gear, lighting and the like, it’s a different story.

We just got FCP 6.0 yesterday, installed it and no images. Did the 6.2 thing and everything works fine. I’ve shot 4 jobs up to this point and we’ve been holding our breath till today.

Do you have a merchant account? it doesn’t appear so. You cannot charge a person’s card unless you are an authorized merchant, signed up with a bank. Talk to someone at your bank. Also, ask about taking cards over the phone and over the internet. It’s all different processes and companies.
When you get your company going, your rental contract will have to have a clause that contains an agreement that the renter will be liable for damage or loss. A rental company here in Phoenix allowed us to use their contract word for word and it has helped us a lot.
Lastly, there is a software program written specifically for video rental companies. Look into it.
The first people you need to hire are: an attorney, an accountant, and an insurance person.

When you’re done, you’ll need to render it to several types of files. You can send it on a hard drive to someone like E-Film for a film out, create a file for your DVD, and for TV, I would start with an HDCAM or HDCAM SR tape copy. The SR is higher quality but harder to find. Another tape option would be D-5. Sundance wants everything on HDCAM. Some TV networks want D-5, some want DigiBeta. And for film, printing from individual frames on a disc would be a snap. Shop that one around but E-Film is the name that pops up often.
We just sold a feature film to NetFlix and everything went on DigiBeta, both widescreen and 4×3 versions. They made their own DVDs.Steve Wargo
