I wouldn’t use P2 if you gave it to me for free. It’s a royal PITA and we’ve been on several shoots where a $2k per hour crew was standing in wait while files were downloading. Recording to an external device is another matter. But, remember this. Sooner or later, you’ll need to store a bunch of footage. Think about it. Think about the future, not today. As much as we hate tape, it works for many years to come. I’ve had drives die because of static electricy or being dropped. My choice would be a tape recording unit or the Sony BluRay. The Sony has 1/2″ chips also. That being said, I’ve seen some beautiful stuff come from the JVC cameras ans we just used an XLH1 Canon on a shoot in Mexico as a second unit to our HDCAM camera. Compared to our $80K Sony, the Canon was a beautiful thing at a lot less money. When we were done, I put the tapes in my pocket and away we went.

We’ve done this. Fake the pencil. Have someone hold an imaginary pencil and zoom to where it would be. Match the background for your second shot and pull out to reveal the hand and then the person. Now, here is the part that is going to sound really cheezy but bear with me. Using a large monitor with a glass crt, use a sharp dry erase pen and have the first person hold an actual pencil. Zoom in and focus on the pencil. Lock the tripod head. Trace the pencil with the pen directly on the glass. I’m assuming that you have a soft, bright, out of focus background. Reach in and remove the pencil so that you now have a clean plate, without the pencil. Measure your brightness with a waveform. At your second location, create a matching background and pull out to reveal the second setting. Your pencil can be in a hand or in a cup. Simply put the pencil in later. Experiment.

First of all, don’t ever record ANYTHING without monitoring the record device, both audio and video. I hope you can fix your present problem but make sure that you never forget what happened here. I learned this lesson the hard way 20 years ago and I never start a session without thinking about that one time.
Even though your talent was antsy, as a professional, you must take the time to fix the problem before you shoot. A professional makeup artist has bailed us out on numerous occasions when we’ve had a last minute disaster. She will jump in and tell the camera crew that she needs a minute or two to adjust a shiny spot, adjust a collar, put some hair in place or something, just to burn a few minutes. It seems like the CEOs will wait a minute for a lady when they’re all over us guys to “get it done”. A knowledgable, experience make up artist can save your butt.
As for the camera guy with no headphones, find someone else. Not wearing headphones is like shooting with no monitor.

Horita has several products that do exactly what you want. To make anything wireless, all you have to do is use a small wireless mic system. The time code is an audio signal. You can plug into the tc output of a camera or deck and run the line to the mic input on a transmitter. At the receiver end, go from the receiver output to the Horita input and you’ll have wireless timecode. I think it’s horita.com

By “moves around a lot”, do you mean that he gets out of his seat or that he squirms? You’re not very specific.
Why not just get a mic that you can see but doesn’t look obvious?
