DVXs are so cheap that you always carry a couple spares. We carry one of those small Panasonic dv clamshells that Panasonic discontinued. This was probably one of the best products that they’ve ever had. I would but two more if I could find them.

Yeah, I figured he needed a $20 solution.
I would loan him my CineAlta but can you imagine what would happen when he had to cough up $40 for a 40 minute cassette? Oh God, there goes the rent money.

Hire a sound recordist to go with you. But hire one that has their own mixer and knows what to do. He/she will know where to pull a tap from the board and will then be able to properly set the levels so that you will have a clean recording. This is a skill that is not learned on a forum on the internet. A qualified recordist will have years of on the job experience and there is a good reason why we pay them $350 to $500 a day. An option is to team up with the sound guy running the board and have him take care of your needs. Slip him $20 at least.

Are you talking about mixing 4×3 with 16×9?
My only advice would be to downconvert the HD using a center cut (or possible a letterbox) so that everything is matched, unless you don’t care about the different aspect ratios.

And there you go. I would, however, make a high quality DVD that you can actually watch and make $1 copies of. And then re-copy them every nine years. Hint: The optical discs of today are much better than those of years ago. Always make multiple copies when possible.
If you do back up on some sort of tape, never store them lying down. Always standing up.
My apologies for making the D-5 comment. I figured you would know what that was. My bad!

Well, VHS is garbage to begin with. Both VHS and Hi-8 are color under formats that have issues. Mini-DV is already compressed 5-1. You can set the recording quality of any DVD recorder to high and it will most likely do a nice job. What exactly do you think you’re going to convert to that isn’t going to compress the image a bit?
Quite frankly, I think you need to transfer everything to D-5 HD. You’ll love the results.
