  • Drop a couple hits of Orange Sunshine or maybe a tab of Purple Microdot and then walk through a party so you’ll know if anybory is giving you the correct advice.

Hint: You’ll need trails and smearing. And pitch up the audio a touch. Enough for it to bother your central nervous system.

I put all of my stuff on DVDs using a Pioneer PRV-LX1 set at the highest quality. Cheap, easy to store and easy to duplicate.

    mark,
If you don’t get set up with an accountant, you’ll see a lot of things go out the window. The NUMBER ONE reason that small busineeses fail or the owner goes to TAX PRISON is because they thought that CPAs were too expensive. A CPA is only around $60 to $80 an hour. You’ve already made enough money to be in tax trouble. If you don’t do this, some day you will be very, very sorry. Besides, you just wrote this on a public forum and where do you think the IRS gets their info on tax cheats?

June 22, 2007 at 6:34 am in reply to: Stunt Demo Reel (Directors please read!)

My recommendation for any demo reel is to give me a piece at three minutes, appropriate music and effects, and not overdone, more like a trailer. Have a second section available that is more along the line of showing longer, more dramatic clips.

We can usually tell if someone has it in the first few minutes. If we’re interested, we can then watch more. I don’t really have time to watch anything over a few minutes, unless you can thrill me in those few minutes.

Also, I would rather watch a clip on the net than go through the process of opening mail, getting the dvd player fired up and then finding out that my dvd player won’t play the DVD+R that someone sent me. If you do your promo by e-mail, use Constant Contact or someone else so your e-mail looks professional.

My mail, package the piece professionally and include all of your contact info on the package and on the disc. When someone sends me a demo and the label is written in marker pen, it goes straight into the trash. Same for anything with spelling errors. You get one chance, make it right.

June 22, 2007 at 6:19 am in reply to: Where to go for Film Transfer?$?$?

Why in the world would film related prices drop unless they were too high in the first place? Just because HD is popular has nothing whatsoever to do with film costs. And, the last thing I would do is go with the low bidder on anything.

If the film industry lowers their rates because of HD, they will all start competing in a negative environment which means that they keep dropping prices to keep up with someone who is scared to death that if they don’t do it cheap, they’ll lose all of that discount business. They will soon be working more hours to make less money. At that rate, they will all be out of business in about 12 months. However, the film people that actually have a brain for business will realize that the competition in their field are dropping like flies and they will double their prices because you won’t be able to get it done anywhere else. Now that film rates have skyrocketed, us HD guys will be able to double our rates.

What will happen is that everything will be priced too high and no one can afford to do any production work and with no work, we will all go out of business and it’s all your fault.

Kodak thought that the world was going to end when digital still cameras hit the market. However, someone over there kept their business hat on and Kodak is making more money than ever. And now, the question: Did the price of photo paper drop when digital cameras took over?

Has the price of film dropped? They are coming up with film stocks that are better than ever before. If anything, it should be higher. That’s how a healthy economy works.

June 17, 2007 at 8:37 am in reply to: F900 – How Long Will It Be Viable?

The F-900 records to tape and it is extremely reliable. My problem with the cameras that record to memory cards is the fact that you can’t hand the footage off to another person. Yeah, we all know about the P-2 workflow advantages and disadvantages as well as the good and bad of Blue Ray. And the hassles of recording with the Red are yet to be experienced. The F-900 is going to be viable for some years to come. It’s not MPEG. It’s great for a one man band type of shoot. We just landed a sizable government job and they specified CineAlta and HDCAM tape. They specifically stated that memory cards and optical discs would not be accepted. After being awarded the contract, I asked to client why they were so specific and they stated that reliability was their number one concern.

Ty. I believe that CSI Las Vegas has the better system. When they need to clean up their recordings from a camera phone video , they get the source list on the left side of their 53″ plasma panel. In the list, you’ll see “Dog Barking”, “Siren”, “Train”, “Airplane”, “Delivery Truck”, “Footsteps”, “Bad Guy Breathing”, “Raindrops”, “People Around a Campfire as a Guy Plays a Guiter”, and of course. “The Sounds of Silence”.

We use a PSC Alpha Mix. Glad we spent the extra $$. It has multiple Beta Snakes out as well as a pair of XLRs. It has ports to power receivers, and can send mic and line level at the same time. 4 years old and no complaints. And. it has T Power. I think it was $1800.
