You need an ICC profile that has a ‘look’ built in to it.
    Works fine with one.

    Actually, all I need is a beta-tester…

Anyone interested who is using Alexa Log-C footage?

With the ability to use ICC profiles converted from real 3D LUTs there seems to be a way…

This could be a very interesting workflow.

Output LUT use for display is a totally separate issue, and is about colour management (see LightSpace CMS).

And the Kona card is not 3D LUT capable so is not good enough for this unfortunately.

For Alexa Log-C footage (and other workflows) you need full 3D LUTs, used as input LUTs to convert footage on a clip-by-clip basis, which ICC profiles can provide.

I would be interested in processing times for ICC profiles in such a workflow.

    That’s what I thought…

Ok, so for Alexa Log-C workflows it would then be possible to use ICC profiles converted from 3D LUTs to control the ‘look’ of the LOG images.

This should be a very powerful workflow and give a high level of creative control to Alexa Log-C footage.

We can convert any 3D LUTs, including Arri’s Alexa LUTs, to ICC profiles using SpaceMan ICC.

Would FCP users be interested in this?

This may help – SpaceMan ICC – it converts 3DLUT into ICC profiles.

It’s been used by some rather large post houses on recent film projects, including ‘Potter’.

    See: https://www.lightillusion.com/spaceman.htm if interested.

And happy to answer any questions.

January 29, 2011 at 1:16 pm in reply to: Got my new Panasonic 42 pro plasma up and tweaked in..

Just to add some info to this thread, I’ve used LightSpace to calibrate a range of plasmas, and the results have been near perfect.

Most have been with HDlink Pro boxes, with one using a Davio, and a couple using the output LUTs in the DI system – Resolve being a common system in use.

We also have a lot of customers using LightSpace with plasmas for self calibration, all calibrating very well.

I obviosuly spent a lot of time helping Denver with his use of LightSpace, but for the life of me I still have no idea why it didn’t work for him. It profiles plasmas as well as any other display.

I really wish we had got to the bottom of Denver’s probelms :o(

Just wanted to add this info as it may help others.

January 28, 2011 at 3:47 am in reply to: Panasonic Plasma Monitoring Solution for davinci

Before you read this post note that Light Illusion sells LightSpace CMS, and therefore I do have an interest in the product.

Having said that, I have calibrated a large number of Plasmas over the past year or so, and have found all require a true 3D LUT to make them accurate to Rec709. It is not enough to just use the displays manual controls.

I have also found that calibration is not at all straight forward when trying to do professional level calibration, especially as all plasmas have inbuild power management controls that automatically dim the screen when bright images are applied. This power management cannot be turned off.

We had to modify LightSpace CMS to take this into account.

However, with a good non-contact probe, and an in-line 3D LUT capability (either in the grading system or an external box, such as an HDlink Pro) very good calibration can be achieved.

But, plasmas do also drift with heat/time, so regular checking and recalibration as necessaey is really required.

I hope this info adds to the discusion.

If anyone wants to ask further questiosn please feel free. I can also supply some ‘general’ initial setups for the panasonic series plasmas that I have found work well prior to full profiling and LUT building. These are just initial setup, and will nto perform accurate calibration on their own, but will help get a better end result.

    Cheers,

    Steve
