FCP and ICC Profiles
Posted by Steve Shaw on March 6, 2011 at 12:26 pmA question, as I’m not an FCP user….
Can FCP work with ICC profiles, in a way similar to Photoshop?
What I mean is, can an ICC profile be used to control to ‘look’ of clips within FCP when playing them, or burn a ‘look’ into clips before they are worked with?
Cheers,
Steve

March 7, 2011 at 2:16 amHi Steve,
You can apply ICC filters to clips via Effects>Video Filters>Quicktime>Colorsync.
You can also “burn” them into clips in the “export>using quicktime conversion” window, or from within Quicktime Player 7, under Export>Video>filter>Adjustments>Colorsync.
Hope this helps,

March 7, 2011 at 7:35 amThat’s what I thought…
Ok, so for Alexa Log-C workflows it would then be possible to use ICC profiles converted from 3D LUTs to control the ‘look’ of the LOG images.
This should be a very powerful workflow and give a high level of creative control to Alexa Log-C footage.
We can convert any 3D LUTs, including Arri’s Alexa LUTs, to ICC profiles using SpaceMan ICC.
Would FCP users be interested in this?

March 7, 2011 at 8:19 amThe only issue with applying the filters in FCP is it will potentially require a lot of rendering. If you have a Kona card, you could apply a LUT to the monitoring which won’t help with the log images in the canvas but at least it should look good on the external monitor, without needing to reconform pre graded shots or have filters that effect RT playback

March 7, 2011 at 8:27 amOutput LUT use for display is a totally separate issue, and is about colour management (see LightSpace CMS).
And the Kona card is not 3D LUT capable so is not good enough for this unfortunately.
For Alexa Log-C footage (and other workflows) you need full 3D LUTs, used as input LUTs to convert footage on a clip-by-clip basis, which ICC profiles can provide.
I would be interested in processing times for ICC profiles in such a workflow.

March 7, 2011 at 10:20 amHi Steve,
There is not real color managing on FC.
No way to work with embed color profiles etc.
QT converts everything to the color space set on the sequence codec (RGB, YUV 601/709).
Some third part codecs makes they own conversion.

March 7, 2011 at 10:34 amWith the ability to use ICC profiles converted from real 3D LUTs there seems to be a way…
This could be a very interesting workflow.

March 7, 2011 at 2:42 pmActually, all I need is a beta-tester…
Anyone interested who is using Alexa Log-C footage?

March 7, 2011 at 3:07 pmIt would be very cool indeed Steve!
But I tried some quick tests in an “8 bit uncompressed” 720P timeline and the “Colorsync” filter seems to have no effect. Has anybody else gotten this to actually work?

March 7, 2011 at 3:15 pmYou need an ICC profile that has a ‘look’ built in to it.
Works fine with one.Steve Shaw
