AE is fine for this, probably best on the desktop. Keep in mind, it won’t be real-time — you have to make the video, do the drawing, waqit to render the whole clip, then burn that to DVD, lay off to tape, whatever.
If you do use AE, look for the Paint or Vector paint effects, or the write-on effect. A more sophisticated look could be achieved by making a mask shape (and refining the shape) then applying (and animating) the stroke effect to make it draw on. Check the COW for tutorials on these effects.
The best tablet is the Wacom — I like the 6×9 Intuos3. The 9×12 was too big for my desk.

In case you didn’t know, 24p video footage, out of the camera, is actually 29.97. That is, pulldown has been added, creating interlaced video. You should consider removing pulldown (file>interpret footage>main) before doing the tracking, so you’ll be working with full frames at 23.976 fps in a 23.976 fps comp.
Let us know if that worked.

You want the best quality for the MPEG-2 Compression, for the DVD right? Try the high quality 2-pass VBR 90-minute setting.
For more info, consider posting in the DVD Authoring COW, or the Compression Techniques COW.

Did you use shift and the +/- from the top of the keyboard? That’s the shortcut for cycling through modes.

You can save presets and name them in the saving.
Or if you want to name an effect in the effect window (F3) just hit return (if I recall) to highlight the effect name, and rename it. Then you can save the preset.

An effect’s property (e.g. lens flare brightness) can have only one expression applied to it. However, that expression can refer to the value of one control, or it could combine the values of multiple sliders through addition, subtraction, multiplication, whatever .. inside the expression.
But maybe more to the point, an effect can have any or all of its properties controlled by one or more expression controls.
Does that help?

Note that nobody is doing anything impossible. They’re all just standing still. Flashes were added in post, masked to appear hidden by the talent. Liquid splashes would have been cast in resin. The basketball would have been held by a hidden support .
“Practical” is the new “CG”.

Consider working in a 23.976 timeline, not 23.98. Your material is 23.976, not 23.98, in spite of FCP might say.
After having said that, I have to add that you might be stuck with the low-frame-rate judder, which happens with anything below 60i (29.97 interlaced), especially when the motion is linear and straight, allowing the eye to predict frames and defeat persistence of vision. It’s an optical phenonmenon that can be seen in movie theatres when the camera pans. Search the COW for “judder”.
But try 23.976 anyway.

Off the top of my head, make the text a 3D layer (more than one layer actually, and rotate them on the Y-axis, with an anchor point off to the side), use a light, make the light cast shadows on another 3D layer.
Or you could probably use AE CS3’s 3D text capability, but I haven’t tried this effect yet.

If you’re talking about the face, that wasn’t lit properly. At least, it needed a rimlight to show the form of the head. Don’t depend on seeing detail at the threshold of visibility, that is, in the shadows at dark, dark, gray — you’ll get buggered at some point in the workflow. An old shooting trick is to squint on set to make yourself lose detail in the highlights and shadows. Then you expose or re-light to bring up the shadows where you need detail.
My 2 cents, for what it’s worth.
