Convert the footage to one of the formats I mentioned and you can use it in 5.5.

Probably 1.0. Unless you’re talking about DVCPROHD, which may require 6.5 or 7. The HD was never an issue, but the codec might be. Which HD codec are you talking about, and why are you asking such a question?

(At any rate, convert any HDV or similar MPEG-related footage to something like Animation, PNG, TGA or Photo-JPEG.)

  • My gut says 29.97: render the 23.976 comp with pulldown (any cadence).

In general, you should ask these questions of the post house or the broadcaster — don’t trust us. Who knows? Maybe they have a spiffy new way of adding pulldown in the transfer.

What? The glitch that looks like a vertical scroll bar? Getting rid of it is easy: just draw a rectangular mask around it. Now the hard part is finding something to replace it. Yes, post people have to be this specific. I would recommend you cut the hole with the rectangular mask tool, then place a copy of the footage below the layer with the hole in it. Now move this copy over until the hole is filled.

It won’t exactly match, and it might look like garbage. You have other options to fill the hole, so here’s one: cut out rectangular bits of the replacement footage, and sneak one in from the right to fill the right half of the hole, and one in from the left to fill the left half of the hole. This way it’s twice as good, or half as bad.

I don’t clone, because things look pretty shaky when I do that, and this is a long clip to do cloning with. The big boys have a lot of guys to do this by hand.

Another alternative is to make a graphic that looks like the glitch, only negative. Since it is partially transparent, you might be able to mess with opacity and transfer modes to get something that darkens the footage so you don’t see the (lighter) glitch. I think that’s the best bet. No holes or footage copies required.

    Anybody else?

You need a plugin. https://www.conoa.com/index.html or Zaxerks Invigorator.

I’d add that in my experience, here’s what I’ve found, in a non-technical way: 🙂

Add is good for light flashes, blooms, streaks and stuff.
Screen is similar, but not as bright.
Multiply is good when adding shadows over things.
Sometimes I use overlay for effects … can’t recall how at this time.
Soft light/hard light are good for faking projector effects.
Hue/sat/lum are good when laying a solid over something else, and giving the solid’s colour (etc.) to the thing below. Experiment.
I only use difference when testing the similarity of two nearly-identical layers, say, for matching positions or checking compression loss. It’s also good for effects.
I use pin, dodge, burn for funky effects occasionally.
The bottom four are used for mattes (cutouts).
Nobody uses dissolve/dancing dissolve. Pretty much.
I haven’t found a use for the others yet.

They all can be used for effects. Test them out.

Hmm … yes, you might have to do that, because Invig doesn’t do raytraced reflections, if I recall. And that’s what you want. 3D apps do that naturally, though.

Did you search the COW for “raytrace”, raytraced” or “raytracing”? There may be other ways of faking it.

Try Photo-JPEG at 89% (or so) quality, DVCPROHD, uncompressed 8-bit or Apple ProRes.

You have to fake it or buy Zaxwerks Invigorator. For faking it, search the COW for “metal” or “chrome”.
