You have to use the “comp camera” switch within the shatter effect.

AE only works with flat planes in 3D space. Any “3D” effect such as shatter just creates a “movie” of a 3D effect which “plays” on one of AE’s flat layers, which acts as a “movie screen”. If you have a 3D camera, you should activate the “comp camera” switch, so the 3D shatter “movie” uses the comp camera as its “camera” and the “movie” looks “right”.

That’s why the shatter layer should stay 2D, flat to the viewer, as if the shatter “movie screen” layer were flat to the viewer. If you make the shatter layer 3D, and view it at an angle, it is like viewing a movie screen at an angle, which looks odd.

    You see?

1.Select one piece of footage, then select file>interpret footage>main.
2.Re-interpret the footage at D1/DV pixel aspect ratio.
    3.Select file>interpret footage>remember interpretation.
    4.Select the other footage.
    5.Select file>interpret footage>apply interpretation.

July 1, 2005 at 3:49 pm in reply to: RAM issue problem

Yes. I’ve had the same problem twice on AE 6.5, OS10.3.7, dual 2, G5.
    (The RAM is stock Apple)

However, I can’t reproduce the problem, nor have I found a solution beyond force quitting.

If I find more info, I’ll post here.

Sorry I couldn’t be more helpful.

Select the layer in the timleine and hit M. Select the mask in the timeline. If you have all verteces selected, click on the layer (not the mask), then click on a vertex.

That should be in the manual …

Hmm … I’m not sure what the other tutorials can’t do for you. Could you be more specific, regarding what they cover and what they don’t?

I’d scan the sig, then draw an open mask with the pen tool over the signature, then apply render>stroke to the layer, using “all strokes” and “reveal original”.

However, if you try to export an SWF from that, and select “rasterize” for unsupported effects, you’ll get a rasterized SWF which will not be as small as a vector SWF. You can try applying something like Optimaze to get the file size down. Unfortunately however, AE’s stroke & paint effects have to be rasterized.

If you need teeny vector files, I recommend you try the effect in Flash. I haven’t tried it, but you might be able to tween a line in a mask layer over the signature layer to reveal the sig.

    Hope that helps,

After Effects always has to render every frame of your video (within the work area), whether you do anything to it or not.

As Josh wrote, search the help for “RAM preview”.

Search the COW on “rotoscoping”. It’s a tedious process, but if you study your footage carefully, you’ll see how you can best used AE’s keyframe interpolation to your advantage.

For instance, if somebody is swaying from left to right, draw a mask around them at the extreme left position, keyframe the mask shape, then go to the frame where he is at the extreme right position, and draw a mask there. Do a RAM preview, and you will see the mask move from left to right. Fine-tune the mask if necessary.

Also, you can mask body parts separately if those parts just change position, not shape.

To fill the figures with white, use effect>render>fill.

There should be more tips in the COW.

June 29, 2005 at 4:14 pm in reply to: mask shadows

I just tried using a mask/stroke layer as a track matte over a text layer, then precomposing the two. If the precomp is then made “3D”, it will cast the proper shadow.

Continuous Rasterization should be “off” for the precomp.
