If the combination of your layer’s scale and position means that the edges of the mask are “between” pixels, and you’re not at full res, you might see that problem.

Are you at full res, with the layer at best quality?

It’s not a matter of “next level” or not — it’s a matter of final deliverable format.

What is your final deliverable? DV tape? Hard drive playback? Web?

If your final deliverable is DV tape, then render to DV as long as you will be just printing to tape via your editing app, not altering or recompressing the video further.

If you are planning on re-rendering or recompressing the piece, say, in a DVD authoring app, you should follow Barend’s advice and render to the animation codec using the DV/DVD frame size and frame rate. This will give you high quality, allowing your video to survive recompression in the DVD Authoring app.

If your piece is never going to be shown at HD res, then there’s no reason to work in HD res, in my opinion. I only work in the highest res that my piece might be seen at, to avoid the speed hit of working in a frame that’s unnecessarily large.

  • They are installed separately from the AE CD, so yes, they are probably missing from the trial.

    Me first! Me first!

Use Quicktime Pro or similar to convert all your MP3s to AIFF or WAV before importing into AE. AE doesn’t like MP3s.

Boy, that’s annoying. It seems to make the stroke “2D”, or flat to camera. The mask still follows the layer, but the stroke forgets that it’s 3D. Bummer.

    No solution yet — sorry.

A square-pixel comp has dimensions that match the desired ratio:

    864×486 is 16:9.
    648×486 is 4:3.
    720×540 is 4:3.

People work in these square pixel comps because objects appear correct in them when working on a computer. It is entirely correct to then drag these comps into a non-square comp and using ctrl-alt-F to fit to the comp. The non-square comp is then rendered to produce a non-square-pixel 720×486 movie that will look correct on TV sets.

You can also work in a non-square comp and select pixel-aspect-ratio correction to temporarily correct things for the computer. You then switch it off before you render.

    Either way is correct.

Don’t use shatter unless you want to blow it apart.

Draw an open mask (just draw, but down’t close it) with the pen tool, then apply effect>render>stroke and animate the end point of the effect.

You might need to draw multiple masks and apply the stroke effect multiple times to get the timing you want.

  • Have you tried upgrading AE to 6.5.1? It’s free.

I don’t know if it will help, though. Sorry.

Click the first of the little buttons at the top of the timeline — or check the help under “dynamic interactions”.

Sorry, I’m not at AE right now.
