  • Parent them to the null?

  • Thanks, gents: they both work in a test comp.

I had forgotten the idea of tying to a slider, George. Good one.
Dan, yours was the expected solution, and it works nicely on a test comp, but not in my original project. Hm.

George, I’ll try yours in the original project, and Dan, I’ll compare yours to my original project attempt. If it still doesn’t work, I’ll dig deeper. When I find the solution, I’ll post back.

    It’s probably something very simple.

    Thanks again,
    Steve

I’m not sure what you mean. Could you be more specific?

When I make these things, I mark the points on the timeline where words occur. I put the words in rough position, rough timing. I watch. I make notes. Then I move the camera around, using hold keyframes, until it works.

If you’re expecting a step-by-step, i can’t help you. Every job can be different, and you have to just dive in and do it, making mistakes. You have to make mistakes.

  • Thanks for getting back to me, Brian. At one point it was a cube, then it became a cube with multiple segments, because six vertices wasn’t enough to suggest the shape in the viewer’s memory. Too bad, because I probably could have animated the bouncing whatever around the vertices manually.

Unfortunately, I only have Broadcast, so TP is out. Sorry i didn’t mention that. So without TP, I’m stuck, eh?

Matt, for this application of Track Mattes, you don’t need a tutorial, just the Help. Off you go!

  • Try R-clicking (ctrl+click on mac). At the bottom of the menu, choose select > your layer.
The menu only shows the layers present at that frame.

If the animated stroke/shape is a track matte, you will follow the character’s outlines exactly. Did you try that?

Use trim paths to animate a stroke that is used as a track matte over the character. The stroke should be slightly wider than the character.

    You may need two strokes.

Google “wiggle expression” and “after effects” or try searching youtube for GDM223SR.
