  • Animating Text with a Trim Path

Posted by Matt Green on December 13, 2012 at 4:11 am

    Hey all,

I’m making a logo that will animate for 2 seconds. The logo is a lowercase letter t that will draw out as two separate strokes simultaneously (the vertical downward stroke and the perpendicular horizontal cross stroke)

By “draw out” I mean something like the new york times logo here:

    https://www.nytimes.com/video/2012/12/11/opinion/100000001951138/solo-piano-nyc.html

I’ve gone trough many tutorials which use “trim path” on the pen tool to draw out a signature in script. Is there a way to do this with normal (non script) text?

    Thanks,
    Matt

Use trim paths to animate a stroke that is used as a track matte over the character. The stroke should be slightly wider than the character.

    You may need two strokes.

    Matt

You can Reveal your logo using Stroke effect.

Thanks for the input. I’ll give those a try.

The one problem is that the letter t I’m animating is a very specific font that I need to duplicate exactly. Using stroke will only give me lines over the type, not actually animate within all of the outlines of the type.

My original idea was to make the letter into a vector (shape) and animate filling it in and with trim path. When I do this the trim path doesn’t fill the shape in uniformly like the new york times logo above. Any ideas?

If the animated stroke/shape is a track matte, you will follow the character’s outlines exactly. Did you try that?

Not yet – I’ll look for tutorials on track mattes and try it (I’m pretty new to AE so I’m not totally sure what a track matte is). If you know any good ones send them my way. Thanks again for your help.

Matt, for this application of Track Mattes, you don’t need a tutorial, just the Help. Off you go!
