The size issue is not wnat the videos play on, but what plays them. DVD? Hard drive?
If they will play on DVD, you have to make the videos at DVD resolution — use the DV preset in AE. You have NO choice in the matter.
The ugliness may be due to the MPEG-2 compression. You were right to start with the Animation codec, but it’s best to compress that Animation movie to MPEG-2 (for DVD) using a compressor that allows VBR, or variable-bitrate encoding. Squeeze or Compressor would be my choice.

The only solution I’ve found for this is to close AE and relaunch.
Other than that, use Task manager or Activity Monitor to see if you’re running out of RAM. If so, access the Secret Prefs: Access Preferences>General, and hold down the shift key until you see the big Prefs dialog. Hold down the shift key longer than you think, if necessary. Click General to see the drop-down, and you’ll see “Secret” at the bottom of the list. Try purging every 5 (or 10 or 15) frames during Make Movie there.

Have you tried rendering something new (no footage) at D1 and seeing if AE interprets that correctly when you import it…?
Let us know what happens. It’s an odd problem.

That matches what I’ve read, even before Leopard. Apple doesn’t share its information with Adobe as it did in the past. They’re more “competitors” than “partners” nowadays, it seems.

If they are sequentially numbered, you can just use file>import, select the first image, and check “PNG sequence” or whatever. AE will import the sequence as a movie.

I’m making an assumption here, but you shouldn’t import MP3s, MPEGs, MPEG-2s, DivX or anything else with interframe compression. Just import good old intraframe codecs such as uncompressed 8-bit, Animation, Photo-JPEG, still sequences and so on.

Yes, you need to go into FCP or another editing app. AE can’t lay off to tape.
