    Well, that was fun.

    Notes:
AE uses 23.976, FCP uses 23.98, for what it’s worth.

    Questions:
    1. under what conditions (playback app, etc.) does the footage actually look correct? FCP? QT Player? (in addition to AE’s QT Player)
    2. how was the footage shot? Is it stock? Do you trust the DP? Might it have been badly telecined?
    3. did you try dropping the clip onto the “new project” button at the bottom of the comp window to ensure the comp has the same settings as the footage?
    4. Did you remove pulldown by using the guess button, and if that didn’t work, trying all cadences?
    5. You said the clip plays fine in AE. You might be using the QT Player that lies within AE? Did you try alt-double-clicking on the clip and stepping through using that viewer?
    6. The clips should not say 23.98 in QT unless somebody tried to remove pulldown before the clip got to you. Is this the case?
    7. Your AE sequence is 720×384. Is this correct? If so, why 384?

You know, I think somebody dropped the 29.97 footage into a 24p FCP sequence, rendered it, then gave it to you without removing pulldown.

Anyway, please answer each question as best you can, and get back to us.

So I ask someone what kinf of car he bought.
    He says “a Ford”.
I say “what kind of Ford?” He says “Mustang”.

Saying you used Quicktime to compress to another format is like saying you bought a Ford. Not specific enough. Here, we need to know which Quicktime codec you used. Was it a Mustang, an Explorer or a Focus?

Anyway, for hard drive playback, try Photo-JPEG at 89% or so, or render to the Animation codec then use QT Player to compress to H.264.

    Please be specific.
How are you attempting to do this?
    Which effect(s) are you using?

Or … select the camera, then layer>transform>auto-orient>off.

Well, that depends on the platform on which you want your final video to play back.

    Web?
    Hard drive?
    DVD?

Ah — good catch, Darby! Dave, for alternate suppliers, search the COW for “crucial” and “RAM”, and a thread on RAM should come up listing a few suppliers.

February 13, 2008 at 7:17 pm in reply to: comp camera rotation with Shatter – HELP!

Oh … I see. Shatter objects don’t respect other 3D layers, since it’s a 2D layer that just uses the Comp camera position/rotation to control how it looks to camera. It doesn’t know the other (3D) layers exist. You’ll have to split the Shatter layer and slide it above or below the other layers in the timeline when appropriate.

AE has its limitations, and they’re almost all in the 3D realm.

Hmm … it sounds like a parallax thing. (I’ll give it parallax more shot) I could be wrong, but I think that you should move the rest of the objects (3D layers?) so they match up with the shattered object. Maybe the Shatter force sent the object slightly forward, where you didn’t expect it to be?

Try adding a new solid, with Shatter at the default (but using comp camera) settings — then you might see how things line up when you compare them to the unshattered portion of the default wall.

Did you try the Cinematography or Staging/Live Events COW?
