guess the preview adds it’s own spin on output. “….
    Not entirely true Charles,
If your output gives a different look than what you saw in the
preview, go back to the drawing board and be patient while you try other options, filters and tweaks to get that perfect render….
…especially, experiment with filters you never used before(that’s how you learn).

In digital media content, there is more than one way to achieve a certain look or effect.
Lets know if you have success.

    Carl,
If thats what you are looking for: i would highly recommend
“prodad Heroglyph”. This plugin works for both the movie studio
and Pro versions of vegas. This is an incredible plugin words cant describe… I not only use it for creating brilliantly professional
text and titles but also for creating a variety of animated effects,
    motion graphics and painting effects.

Another good option to try which splits your video at scene cuts
during capture is “WinDV”. I really love this little tool, and no
matter how sluggish your computer is, you wont experience dropped
    frames during capture.

If you are referring to the “active take feature” where the clip name
appears on the clip in the timeline, you click view on the toolbar,
and on the drop down list, you tick “active take information”.

It seems to me that you are probably overlooking something simple.
If you are rendering 720×480 widescreen resolution, did you use
a widescreen template when rendering? Or are you actually converting a regular 720×480 to widescreen? sorry for the numerous questions, just trying to get your editing up and running.

Also, what do you play back the rendered clip in when you see these
black borders? If you could post a screen-shot of the workflow in
    vegas, it would be helpful.

    Kyle,
Did you customize any of the settings when rendering?
Or just make sure in the ‘event pan/crop window’
you right click and select ‘match output aspect’.

Mostly what format and resolution where you working with?.
