its a FCP bug that never gets fixed. once you actually render the area, it will be fine, but as any sort of RT preview, even a green bar one, FCP uses a procy res image instead.

the powder doesn’t make as much difference as the brushes do. don’t get the cheap brushes they just don’t work as well. powder comes in 2 types, loose and hardpak. most women will tell you that they like hardpak because it doesn’t come loose in the container and make a mess when you open it. a make up person will tell you that the lose stuff is easier the blend.

ideally you should try to get a powder that matches their skin tone as closely as possible, but even being off a bit, no one will know. also having some base cover is great to cover other imperfections.

June 5, 2009 at 5:17 am in reply to: HDV or Pro Res?

there is no problem using ProRes as the TL codec, and putting in HDV, photojpeg, ProRes, animation, MjpegB. I do this everyday mixing HD and SD of various flavors. nothing will blow up, nothing weird will happen.

in fact, FCP will give you more RT by settings the TL to ProRes rather then HDV or just about anything else. ProRes also has 1440 and 1280 settings to accomodate less then full res flavors of HD.

load as HDV, edit in ProRes TL – its the very same thing as having a HDV TL and setting it to use ProRes to render with.

June 2, 2009 at 5:16 am in reply to: 720p capturing at 59.94 or 29.97?

59.94 is a transport stream for 720p. if they shot 29.97 ( quite likely ) then the format simply doubles every frame. the kona and matrox I/O’s can capture native 29.97 by simply dropping every other frame. this does no harm since its a duplicate frame anyway, and you cut your drive space usage by 1/2.

all the various FPS used by the varicam simply pad extra frames into 59.94. what the camera does is add VITC data to flag the dupe frames, and your capture card ( should ! ) read them, and then only capture the actual unique frames and make native files.

as for delivery, again your card will pad the extra frames if you edit 24/30 FPS. standard procedure, nothing wrong

don’t forget the MXO2 in this…. its portable, and you get both laptop and tower interface cards. the new ones about to ship have h.264 hardware encoding ( yes it costs extra, but ) that at the end of the day can be a really great thing to have when you need to make web previews. its faster then RT encoding even for HD material. they also have the cheaper mini if you don’t need all the I/O. they do have HMDI in and out though, and its color managed which is pretty handy for matching your LCD up better.

I’ve using doing this for over a year with my HD100 to record via FW. yup, FCP doesn’t like a HDV stream if it doesn’t see running TC

June 2, 2009 at 5:03 am in reply to: choosing the right monitors

samsung & LG both make great screens. they also make the panels for apple displays & laptops. I’m using a MXO2 to feed a samsung T220HD monitor and I’m happy with it. the “broadcast” sony 1984Q CRT is now in the B room. before folks get too hung up, the LCD’s that are out there are really very good. sure there is _some_ difference between a $4k and a $300 display, but not that much…. until you get into the crazy money. with 10bit consumer displays starting to appear, there may not be any real difference. of course with the MXO2 I can tweak out the look from its control panel… enough so that I felt comfortable getting rid of the CRT display.

thats normal. there is about 4 frames of offset between the canvas and your video out. if you don’t like it, complain to apple… and see how far that gets you. 🙁

June 2, 2009 at 4:56 am in reply to: Looking for a good sounding Lavalier Mic

Sanken COS-11 is hands down the nicest sounding lav out there, mixes nicely with a CMC64(1), and quite reasonable. the countryman B6 is thin sounding, but if super small / hidable is important people use them. Tram TR-50 is mediocre at best, the sonotrim is the much better sounding version. ECM-44 is cheap, but so-so. ECM 55 is decent, but really big. ECM-66 is cardiod, skip it. ECM-77 ok, but I’ld still pic the COS-11. haven’t tried the ECM 88 but its pricey. DPA also makes some very nice ones…. and AT is junk… sorry.

since you know you will go to SD no matter what, use a SD TL. ProRes since its 10 bits ( or can be ) will probably be the best choice. you can place your HD clips right in, and have the option to pan / scan / move them around for reframing. FCP does well with mixed formats for the most part.
