    Hi everyone,
As I have read in some threads earlier about problems live recording (harddisk recording the camera signal live) with the canon XH A1 and I just (might) have found a solution, I wanted to share it with you.

As you are aware, the problem seems to be that there is no time code generated unless you hit the “record” button, which would limit you to 60 mins recording as the XH A1 is tape based.

So here is what you do:
    Go to the menu.
    choose first entry: signal setup
    choose first entry: time code
    choose first entry: free run

to my understanding in this case the time code keeps running even when you do not hit the record button. This means of course you might not want to start and stop your recording continuously but rather shoot all your video in one go, to have a continuous timecode in your video.

I did not have a chance yet to test it, so please make sure you do tests before you go live. And kindly feed back your experiences here.

Free run TC is a royal pain to injest from tape based sources.
We actively discourage anyone from shooting this way. If they want BITC DVD from their footage while we source in to a system it’s double the cost for two passes for each tape let alone the amount of time it takes to stop and start during injest. It means active baby sitting on a DS and prolonged time if not babysat in FCP.
Generally speaking it’s just a bad Idea. Anyone who shoots this way should be made to injest and edit their footage. after that they will use rec run code for the rest of their life.

I suspect the firestore problems with canon products is canon’s implementation of the firewire standard or lack thereof

I’ve using doing this for over a year with my HD100 to record via FW. yup, FCP doesn’t like a HDV stream if it doesn’t see running TC
