I don’t believe that the default will get you widescreen. Make sure you tell it that you want it to be widescreen by using 720X480 at a pixel aspect ratio of 1.2
And even then it will only be widescreen on players that understand non square pixels. And for what reason did you use a generic AVI instead of DV AVI?

Looks pretty good. I am happy to see people buy things and then be thrilled with the results. I am shopping for an HDV editing monster, so I am hoping that the Conroe EE is my route to Nirvana.

It is usually a good idea to finish projects in the same program you started them in. There are differences in the versions.
If you had imported the project rather than opened it, I believe you would find that the PEK files are created, but not large conformed audio files.

Often the person stands out from the background enough that you can make it monochrome and play with the levels to get it to be all white or all black. Using a garbage matte, isolate the person and use that as a track matte.

Throw a clip on a sequence, apply a sixteen point garbage matte, pull in the edges with the nodes and play around a bit. With practice, you can almost make a reasonable circle.

Sometimes you need to mask off the area with a garbage matte in order to be able to apply the effect just to the area of interest – on a copy of the video. That allows you to increase the color range.

I will be geting a RAID0 in my next system because of my HDV editing. With DV it never seemed important.

Test it yourself, but I think you will find that a 720X540 (square pixel) image fits very nicely into a 720X480 frame.

Not without a plugin from MainConcept. Premiere Pro 2.0 can do it if the files are renamed to .mpg but older versions need assistance.
Or, you can buy a DVD Ripper like ImTOO DVD Ripper to help you.
