Premiere Pro 2.0 has a timecode effect. If you type the word timecode into the “Contains” box oon the Effects tab it will jump out at you.

Put your black matte over a white color matte in the new sequence that gets nested as a track matte. That should help.

As I recall from the dark ages of editing, you create the matte using 50% opacity or so to get it placed correctly, then you copy it and paste it into a new sequence. Set the opacity to 100% and then replace the original matte in the original sequence with the new sequence nested into the first.

If the DV capture mode on the PC works, then the camera is set wrong for HDV capture. The little LED above the firewire connection should be lit for HDV, not DV. The CONV should be turned off. Use Sony & Standard for your PC settings.

So put the resized inage on a separate sequence and nest it back in. That should eliminate the scale issue.

I would make the heart in Photoshop. Black heart on white background. Make it big enough so that a 720X480 frame fits into the black area.
Then in Premiere Pro, scale it down to 0 and scale it back up with keyframes. Do this in a new sequence. Then nest that sequence into the main sequence and use it as a track matte. Since the scaling happens in a different sequence, it should solve your problem.

Yes, well, stills are a different matter, especially if set to scale automatically.

Create a new project with the correct settings and import the old project into it. Go into the bins and drill down until you can open the original sequences.
