I have been using Premiere Pro 2 for about a week on an HP DV9000t customized (Core 2 Duo 2GHz, 2 Gigs of ram, and an NVIDIA 7600 256 megs, 2 x 100 gigs 7200 SATA drives). This laptop came loaded with Vista Home Premium, we opted out of the 64 bits version of Vista because of known driver issues. I could have dual booted to XP, but Vista makes use of a nice HDMI output, not supported in XP.

I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised to see that everything has been running rather smoothly. I dedicated an entire project to this setup, and the ONLY bug I have noticed is rather minor, the check box allowing you to only show the exact file when Premiere is asking you to link footage does not work, it just shows all files no matter what.

I have yet to throw an actual HD project at it, but this machine is running all possible non rendered effects flawlessly at the highest preview setting with DV and HDV.

I will report back as (I am sure) new bugs will come to my attention.

    Cheers,

    Vince

    Vince,

Do you find it runs slower than with XP?

    Steven,

I have to say that Premiere on this particular machine is actually amazingly fast and very responsive.

I did hear that overall speed would decrease by as much as 30% with Vista, but so far, I am rather impressed.

Of course, as you can imagine, I am not trying this on a massive project. This was 3 hours of DV, with about 400 pics, and about 20 additional footage files that were either in HDV, or uncompressed. I do also have two 7200 SATA drives, which allows me to separate things neatly.

This is one other small bug that I should have mentioned. The scroll bar in the project panel cannot be dragged. You either have to use the arrows, click above / below, or use the keyboard.

I also used DV rack on this machine as back up capture. I had to disable the AERO them to get the video to display, everything else worked out fine.

Vista, BTW, is a beautiful interface that I am really getting to love, even if we have to give back some in terms of Ram; I did have to disable the warning features in order to get some work done.

I also have to recommend the HP DV9000 line, (which I used to dislike). It a superb machine (although a little flimsy in some places), the dual lamp screen also makes it a perfect companion on the field.

    Cheers,

    Vince

Small update on Vista and PP2.

A workaround to scroll bar not working properly is to set the project panel in icon mode.

I did get a few instances of a flickery program window, which goes away after moving the CTI to a different clip, or hitting the space bar a couple of time. This has been fairly rare and may be related to the graphics card set to highest setting.

I have now completed a second project without any major issues. I did notice an actual better render time compared to a similar XP setup (about 20 minutes with the exact same project, but this could o course be due to many other factors; no major slow down however).

I was able to use the entire production suite so far, including Encore which was said to not even start under Vista.

    Cheers,

    Vince
