You don’t need Elements. You need a $20 Motion JPEG (MJPEG) codec from Morgan Multimedia or MainConcept.

What version of Premiere Pro are you using? Trial versions won’t work with MPEG video. And older versions won’t edit native HDV.

Well, that is when you use the Project Manager to create a copy of the project with just the material you have used so far.

AVCHD files are not supported by Premiere Pro since is is a consumer format – at least at the current level of data rate and optics anyway.
Convert the files to HDV using this product from Elecard.

Just sort by the column that tells you how many times the footage is used in the project. All of the unused clips will be at the top or bottom of the list. If it has not been used, it is safe to delete it from the project.

Have you tried just export a few seconds on a sequence? Does that work? Can you export the last 10 seconds of your sequence. The first 10 seconds?

What kind of files are you importing? Anything other than DV AVI Type2 captured right from the Premiere Pro capture window might have audio issues that you would not expect.
