  • Premiere Pro hangs while generating peak file.

When importing avi files into Premiere Pro 2.0, there is a blue bar at the bottom of the screen with the caption Generating Peak File for ‘filename’.avi. As long is the bar is progressing, the program seems to be working fine. When it gets to the end of the bar, the program stops, all functionality is gone, and Task Manager reports Premiere Pro as Not Responding. Also, the program grabs 55-70% of the CPU cycles and will not let go until the program is forced to quit. If I import an mp3 or wav audio file the peak file will get generated and all is fine. I have three 500 GB hard discs (all with at least 475GB free) and I put the PP2 scratch discs and the media cache database on something other than the C drive where PP2 resides. My system is an Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 Conroe 2.66 with 2 GB of DDR2 800 RAM, an ASUS P5W mobo, and an ATI X1950XTX 512MB GDDR4 PCI Express video card. All drivers are current.

What kind of files are you importing? Anything other than DV AVI Type2 captured right from the Premiere Pro capture window might have audio issues that you would not expect.
