How big is the drive with 13 gb left? Once you get below 10 percent free (which would be a 130 gb drive) things get bad.
The best bet is to get another drive, and put the media on that. Drives are relatively cheap these days.

When you drag to the timeline, if you are over the midline of the track, you are inserting and the image of the clip appears as an outline.
If you drag below the midline of the track, it is an overwrite, and the image of the clip appears as a solid rectangle.
If this visual feedback is insufficient to alert you, I’m not sure what type of visual feedback would help remind you that the canvas/timeline is already marked with in and out.

There is a visual reference, which is the in and out marks showing in the canvas window.
Also, if you drag from the viewer window to the timeline, you get the viewer source’s marked length regardless of in and out in the timeline/canvas.

If this is all being done in Final Cut, have you considered using XML?

Once you find the Final Cut Application, click and drag the icon back to the dock, and that shortcut will again be available.
Don’t forgot, you always have Mac Help available (activate finder by clicking decktop, help menu, mac help.

Final Cut Pro is not a scriptable application. You might be able to script something by utilizing universal access to control menu selections (universal access is in system preferences) but it would likely be clunky.
What you could do is have different user logins, and use fast user switching, since each user has their own preference file. I haven’t tried this, but it should work. Better make sure they all have access to the project files and drives, or you’ll get lots of permissions errors.

You’d better add on the extended warranty and rust inhibiting undercoating. And you just won’t be able to live with the stock upholstery, upgrade to leather.

I am working on a feature length project now shot with this camera, and I brought the footage in native via firewire. There were some issues around the cut points, as the JVC doesn’t seem to terminate the group of frames. This could also be because my dual 1.42 G4 isn’t the quickest pony out there. So I lost several seconds around each point where the camera was shut off. I just told the crew to pre and post roll, and things were okay.
Otherwise, it has been problem free.
If you want to work in 23.98, I suggest recapturing using HDV 720p 24 setting.
Fixing your current state of affairs might take longer than recapturing.
