Activity Forums Apple Final Cut Pro Legacy EDL question

    Hi,

If we include the clipname info in the EDL, does it always indicate them in upper case ?

I have clip names with combination of lower, upper and proper case but in the EDL it is always in upper case.

For example, my clipname is shot1_scene2_102_001 but in the EDL, it will be shown as SHOT1_SCENE2_102_001

Anyone know if there’s a way to preserve the name with its case as it is in the EDL ?

Given that EDL’s are a product of an ancient age of computing, I doubt that it CMX formats will support anything but uppers. Try other EDL formats like Sony. Even then you need to be aware that whoever is reading your EDL must be able to read that format. Thats why mostly I use CMX 3600. Bog standard.

What is the problem with the case anyway?

    Hi Michael,

The EDL is to be used in a conform station to conform from DPX sequences. We converted the low res JPEG sequences to Quicktime for offline edit in FCP. From there we generate an EDL which is then manipulated through a script which copies the clipname (in the info *FROM CLIP:) to the tapename. The conform station uses the tapename to conform to the hi-res DPX sequences and it is case sensitive but because of the upper case in the EDL, we now have to use upper case for all the file naming.

I’ll give the other EDL formats a try.

If this is all being done in Final Cut, have you considered using XML?

If the conform station is FCP then use Media Manager to create an offline version of your final cut changing the codec to match the hi rez. Reconnect to the hi rez media. As the file/ clip names are the same then it should reconnect without complication. I would avoid an EDL if possible. XML is also worth looking at.
