Yes you can delete the files. Your best option is to get an external FW drive and store the files there.

My MBP is set up that way.

You can reposition them ahead in the timeline. You can not reposition them backwards.

Not currently. Even with the AVCHD format, you want to bring it into your system using DVCPro HD, ProRes 422 or another codec. HDV and AVCHD are difficult formats to edit natively.

You can capture ProRes on a G4 with the correct hardware. Your hard drives need to be able to handle the throughput.

Normal quality is targeted at 145 Mbps, and high quality is targeted at 220 Mbps.

FCP is not to blame for keying. It begins with your source footage.

Primatte filter in Motion is good. Check out DVGarage’s DVMatte Pro.

Hidden on your hard drive is a file called Final Cut Studio System ID or Final Cut Pro System ID. It can tell what current version of FCP/Studio you currently have.
