Just a gotcha for folks who ordered the upgrade version of Studio 2. You need an ORIGINAL serial number from Final Cut Pro in order to install the upgrade version of the software.

In my case, that meant going all the way back to my FCP 1.2.5 serial number. Studio 2 would NOT accept my Studio 1 or FCP 5 because they were upgrades and according to AppleCare, I HAD to use the last “full” copy of Final Cut Pro that I owned.

Moral of the story, even if you sell off your software or trash it, like I have done with FCP 1.2.5, keep the serial numbers around!

That’s going to get tricky when we get to FCP30 and have to borrow a time machine to find our FCP1.0 serial that we’ve long since lost…..

    More clarification from AppleCare.

here are two different Final Cut Studio 2 upgrades.

One that is an upgrade for someone who originally owned the retail version of just Final Cut Studio or Final Cut Production Suite. This is $699.

The second for someone who originally owned the retail version Final Cut Studio 1. This is $499.

Our second edit suite was upgrading from the full retail version of Studio 1 and we could not install that version either. Our reseller honestly didn’t realize there were two different versions out there. So be sure you ordered the correct upgrade or you’ll run into some issues during the upgrade install.

It’s all being squared away on our end right now.

You’re not kidding! I mean I threw away my FCP 1 and 2 discs, but luckily still have a sticker around with the serial numbers still around.

I still have my copy of FCP 2…in fact, I installed it on my iMac (the original BONDI one) for the kids to learn FCP. I capture footage and then get it to them…albiet USB drive. SO they are limited. But, they can play.

I never toss those stickers man.

    Walter,

Hmmm – I just bought the upgrade box at the apple store – wasn’t offered two different upgrades — just “the upgrade” no questions asked — think it was 499.00

Now I have my original verion FCP 1.0 and every disk and upgrade since then.

Does this mean my upgrade won’t work if I use the my first version serial number for the upgrade – haven’t taken this out of the box yet

What’s wrong with these guys? Punishing you for buying MORE of their products with a higher price?

I’ll chime in here with a similar question: I just purchased the $499 upgrade from FCS at the local Apple Store, but my FCS was an “upgrade” to my original FCP 3.0 “Retail” purchase.

This means I should exchange it for the $699 upgrade from FCP, right?

    Thanks,

    Gary

Well, We have had upgrades since version 3.0 . I bought the $499 version and installed it today. After the installation process asked for the FCS 6.0 serial # it asked for the original serial #, I put in the one that came with my 5.1 crossgrade discs and that worked just fine for me. Bummer that this is causing folks trouble.
