Is it me or is it impossible to move the chapter markers in a Final Cut Timeline?
I need to insert a piece of video in the middle of a long sequence. I want the existing markers to move down the timeline with the rest of the video. I know they will not move when I do the insert but can’t i drag them and snap them back in place?

You can reposition them ahead in the timeline. You can not reposition them backwards.

You are correct. You cannot move the markers directly by dragging. What I do is place the playhead where I want a marker to go, copy the timecode in the Canvas, open the marker to be moved, and paste the timecode into the timecode start field. When you close the marker and it will move to the desired time. This is tedious, but it’s the only way I know to move markers.

Shift tilde repositions markers ahead in the timeline.

If I do go thru the cut-&-paste process of moving all the markers, will DVD studio recognize them as the same markers that already exist? Will all my stories have the correct marker positions?

Place the play head directly over the marker in the sequence and type mm (m twice) to open the Marker Editor.

You can rename or even erase that marker.

Just Move the playhead to where you want the marker moved to and do the mm and create another chapter marker of the same name.

How does shift+tilde work? I tried it and nothing happened.

As long as they have the same names DVD Studio Pro will recognize them, even if they’re in a different place. Sometimes during the final build, DVDSP won’t like if the marker is somehow winds up between GOP boundaries and the build will fail. In such a case you’ll have to move the markers in DVDSP (where you can drag chapter markers, but only every 15th frame).

Place your playhead anywhere ahead of your marker and press shift tilde.

Your keyboard shortcut for moving markers forward on the timeline just saved me a great deal of time! Thanks for sharing that!
