A good way to learn the FCP interface is to read the manual. That is under Help. Your render selections are located very close to the help menu item.

Do not daisy chain your hard drives. I’ll bet it sees the camera now. Do you have a Canon camera? Even though you have more than one FW ports, they are all on the same bus.
