Internal SATA drive would be fast enough, but you obviously get better performance with RAID systems.

I’ve actually cut native HDV using the system drive on my G5 i-mac

So that’s why the preview has always worked on our system – we never have digital desktop on!

Doesn’t seem to have fixed round tripping to Soundtrack Pro at all in the brief time I’ve been playing with it.

iphoto bugs aren’t fixed in 10.42 as promised as well.

Plus the fact it’s HD of course, more pixels more calculations needed – slower renders.

When you say slow – exactly how slow do you mean, say compared with DV?

  • I don’t think you can capture native HDV in FCE, you are limited to the Apple intermediate Codec only – I’ve done extensive testing with AIC and I’m not impressed at all, native HDV in FCP5 is much cleaner.

We made the switch with no problems so far, if you choose to do it, make absolutely sure it is a full CLEAN install of both the OS and FCP 5. Most people with problems have done upgrade installs.

Mike, you don’t say if your setup is actually capturing video or it’s just not monitoring video.

If it’s not capturing you may have ilink set to “downconvert” in the camera menu, this one keeps coming up time and time again. I know because I did the same thing first time!

Over the last 3 days I’ve captured over 20 hours of HDV footage without any problems, the new log and capture window works like a dream for me, much nicer than the old one. I have a dual 2.0 G5 with Nvidia 6800, Apple Fibre channel card and BMD Decklink Pro HD card.
