  • Final Cut Pro 5 & HDV Problems…..

Posted by Mike Wavrecan on June 16, 2005 at 4:24 pm

    Hello,

Just got the new version of FCP installed from the FC Studio and was really excited to start editing a series in HDV. That’s before the problems started…

I cannot get a picture using the ‘HDV 1080i60’ easy setup or the ‘HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60’ Codec’s. I’ve tried a few other settings but am pretty lost with HDV in general. The timecode works fine, it is just the video and audio that isn’t coming through?

If anyone knows what to do please help.

    Thanks,
    Mike

    hi mike

this is a known issue with HDV 1080 60i (according to Steve Connors, 1080 50i works fine)

    This is from Apple’s “late-breaking FCP 5 issues” doc…

HDV Log and Capture Preview Is Disabled When a PCI Graphics Card Is Installed

If your computer has a PCI graphics card installed and you are logging or capturing HDV footage, Final Cut Pro does not preview video or audio in the Log and Capture window. You can still log and capture, but you need to use your HDV camcorder display to preview video.

if you have a PCI graphics card in your G5 (in my case a blackmagic HD Pro) then that kills the display in the log and capture window

the solution is to monitor from the deck or camera as you log, but beware, there is a massive lag between what you see on the camera and what’s being fed to FCP

with that and the sluggish reaction when trying to cue through HDV material, it makes it a pain in the ass in post production – and this is just the logging stage!!

    hope this helps

    Hmmm….interesting about PCI cards.

So although your preview is disabled, you should still be able to see picture on the LCD as it captures, right? Also, I assume that you should hook up the speakers out of the HDV camcorder so you can also hear what you’re doing, just like a normal FCP setup.

Mike, you don’t say if your setup is actually capturing video or it’s just not monitoring video.

If it’s not capturing you may have ilink set to “downconvert” in the camera menu, this one keeps coming up time and time again. I know because I did the same thing first time!

Over the last 3 days I’ve captured over 20 hours of HDV footage without any problems, the new log and capture window works like a dream for me, much nicer than the old one. I have a dual 2.0 G5 with Nvidia 6800, Apple Fibre channel card and BMD Decklink Pro HD card.
