  • Capturing to SD from HDV

Hi, I’ve got a project coming up using a mixture of Digibeta and HDV (shot at HDV.) The final output and transmission are SD. I’m plannig to capture the HDV as SD in the uncompressed codec (either 8 or 10 bit.) We may also use the HDV full size for some graphics work, but that’s independent of the edit. I’m wondering how to get the signal in for capturing. So:

    1. Is it possible to capture the HDV via firewire and transcode it to SD on the fly?

    2. Or can I use the downconverter in the deck and capture via component or SDI?

    3. Is there an SDI output on the HDV decks?

    4. Is there a rs422 control port on the HDV decks?

    Thanks,

    Will

You can set the camera (or also deck i beleive) to downconvert HDV to dv over firewire… the results are quite nice.

I did a little experiment last week and captured HDV as 4:2:2 8bit SD via the component output on the Z1 and the Decklink Express. It looked pretty good. I hope to have a better look at footage later in the week. The downside is that there is now timecode.

Has anyone else had any experince capturing HDV to SD this way?

    Hey Brent,

use firewire as deck control that will
    take care of Timecode.
