  • Should I upgrade to OS tiger & FCP5?

Posted by Ed Stevens on June 20, 2005 at 1:43 pm

    My SYSTEM

MAC dual G5 2.5 gig. 4.5 gb RAM. OS 10.3.8
    Blackmagic Decklink Extreme card v4.8b
    FCP 4.5 production Suite
    500GB G-Raid Firewire800
    Decks = Beta-SP, DVCpro, DigiBeta.
Audio Mix = Mackie 1604 VLZpro

I’ve heard so many horror stories about upgrading to Tiger and FCP. Has anyone
had complete success with this upgrade? I do own the sotware now but I’m
    afraid to upgrade.
    ANy help?

If that’s your ownly system… I would wait until 10.4.2 has been released and tested for a while.

We made the switch with no problems so far, if you choose to do it, make absolutely sure it is a full CLEAN install of both the OS and FCP 5. Most people with problems have done upgrade installs.

It’s been ok so far but i can’t say that there is any overwhelming reason to do it unless you need the Multicam features desperately or need to capture more than 2 channels of audio (am I forgetting anything?). The basic functionality is mostly the same.

Otherwise we get the impression that it is a tiny bit more sluggish and we have had a few crashes though not that many. That’s progress…

Widgets are a very cool Tiger feature.. they give editors yet another fun thing to play with instead of working! 😉

We needed the multichannel capture or I would not have done it; for basic editing there is no appreciable benifit for us and you may want to wait a bit.

Has anyone tried the firewire HDV capture and editing?

FCP 5 or FCP Studio do not require Tiger.
there is an exception on the Studio side and it pertains to Motion 2

We have a number of rooms here at our facility that I’ve upgraded and our os is 10.3.9
We use both BlackMagic cards as well as Kona and using the latest drivers from BMD, 5.0b2

Mulitcam works great, we just shot w/6 cameras this past weekend and are cutting the show now,
