It’s actually closer to 7 to 8 times realtime and same thing applies edit native then render to Prores on the final pass.

This has been covered a lot, IMHO the best way to work with HDV in FCP is to capture HDV native via firewire and then do your edit in an HDV sequence, you’ll find it’s not quite the nightmare it’s made out to be. When you have finshed your edit simply set your render codec to ProRes (if your system can handle it)
This gives you the least amount of conversion and higher quality renders than with HDV.
Some people prefer to ingest in other codecs via HDSDi or a converter box.

I’d never consider the stock card in a Pro Mac, it’s there to help the headline cost to be a bit lower. The Nvidia 8800 is a very good card for not much extra money.

On your test the colour is nicer on the Panny, but you can soon make the EX look as good by grading in post.

Bear in mind if it’s anything like the XDCam series, and I’m sure it will be, there will be a lot of changes via firmware upgrades. Sony seem to be responding to user criticisms so feedback like this can actually make a difference.

The VBR on the codec helps with fast motion, there have been some rough and ready tests posted on other forums where a fast moving shooting situation that “breaks” the HDV codec doesn’t show any problems when shot with the EX1.
The story from Sony is that the XDCam HD codec is more efficient than the HDV codec as it was designed to be used in a broadcast environment. We’ve been shooting XDCam HD for a while and have had no issues. Obviously the EX is packing more information in to the same codec so I’m going to be interested to see how it holds up when we get ours.
I couldn’t tell you any of the technical reasons why the codec is better and to be frank I don’t care, as long as the codec holds up well in real world shooting situations then the theory is irrelevant.
I think the next few weeks will tell as more people get hold of the cameras.
