Have a look at Apple.com – although the store is down at the moment, so I can’t check prices.

Of particular interest (possibly) is this:

“Every Intel Xeon processor features an enhanced SSE4 SIMD engine. Capable of completing 128-bit vector computations in a single cycle, SSE4 is ideal for transforming large sets of data, such as applying a filter to an image or rendering a video effect.”

Not sure if that’s a new feature, hence “enhanced” above, or just the same old Xeon stuff.

PS – Planning on a person purchase, so I’ll try to run a side by side with the old 8-cores when I get one, in a month or so.

Great upgrade with good new graphics cards but still no BluRay!

Just noticed Apple has posted performance comparisons with the old octo-core, showing 10-20% speed increases on FCP renders. Woo. Still, better standard gfx card, and faster PCI bus. A nice gradual bump.

    [Steve Connor] “still no BluRay”

Yes, funny, that was the one thing the rumour sites was a definite for the new systems. Right as usual! Of course, the store is still down, but you’d think they’d mention it on the new spec pages.

PS – love the fact that the UK site still has the old specs and no mention of the bump. You would think Apple could update them all at once – they are in the computer business, aren’t they?

Both the US and the UK stores have been down for a while, must be having issues!

Those rumor sites are always accurate after all! 🙂

but it is interesting that the machine was released one week before Steve’s keynote speech next week. So that makes you wonder what he is going to show. A new MacBook Pro maybe?

I would have to believe that BluRay support is coming at some point since Apple is in the BluRay consortium and I’m quite surprised that the format is not mentioned anywhere on the Tech Specs. I’m waiting for the store to come back up online to see if it’s an option.

Nice update for sure… but also glad here that my 8 core oldie is only about 10% slower than the new machine… maybe the blu-ray support is being saved for Macworld…? dunno, but it’s time to be able to burn blu-ray I think… the news around the format leads me to believe that it will end up winning the war.

More titles on blu-ray are coming than on HD DVD by a very large margin. CES show reports are saying the crowd around the blu-ray tech is MUCH larger than the one around the HD DVD stuff.

That would be because Warner Brothers will cease HD-DVD production in May and become a Blu-Ray exclusive title. 7 Major Studios for Blu-Ray vs. 2 for HD-DVD. In fact there was some sort of major HD-DVD event cancelled after the Warner Brothers announcement.

We’ve been discussing this in my blog actually.

Peter Wiggins should be really stoked now though, support for 4 graphics cards via 300W of power. He’s been wanting serious multiple graphics support for quite some time now.

Interestingly, A FCP user group has a meet the day after the keynote. They announced they would have a secret new feature to show off, and Tech Crunch (a fairly reputable tech site) said they had ‘confirmed’ the new feature revealed would be native Redcode support in FCP.

If true, I suppose this means we are looking at a FCP upgrade next week.

Incidentally, having run FCP and Leopard very successfully on my laptop, I have no real qualms now about a Mac Pro that will probably have to run Leopard. Onwards! Maybe the FCP upgrade will include multicore support in FCP (yeah, right).

If you go down and re-read that thread you will see that Michael Horton refuted this claim. He should know since it is his group that is having the meeting. Again, rumor sites get it wrong.
