Why do people rate the 5D so much? Sure it’s a full frame sensor but that doesn’t matter as the codec doesn’t bear close examination, the skew is terrible and the ergonomics of working with a DSLR is appalling. OK it’s easier to get a “film look” but any professional can get the same out of an EX3

[walter biscardi] ” avoid this format as much as possible because there are just too many small issue with it for me to deal with. When Sony is ready to share all their information with Apple, AJA, BMD, Matrox and anyone else working with Final Cut Pro, then I’ll be more accepting of the format.

Always assuming it’s a Sony issue and not an Apple one, XDCam HD and XDCam EX seems to work as advertised in Premiere Pro and Avid, I assume Sony have shared enough information with them.

If FCP could handle the XDCam proxy workflow, the OP’s issue wouldn’t be a problem

Had a few 720 50P projects recently, no difference in editing at all, renders also don’t seem that much slower as well.

September 24, 2009 at 9:47 pm in reply to: 6k camera – – Panasonic or Sony?

Thought it had been a few days since Walter mentioned his dislike of the Sony EX cameras! I’m not a fan of Panasonic cameras and the DVCPro codec, but I don’t feel the need to shout it every time someone asks a question about it

Having said that I have to disagree 100% I’m afraid, image quality and resolution from the EX cameras is superior to the HVX cameras in my opinion. The workflow is not an issue for the majority of users and the media is considerably cheaper than P2. The LCD screen is much easier to focus with and the lens is better.

    But that’s just my opinion

I’m one of those people who are working with all flavours of XDCam, using native timelines (but ProRes to render!) with no issues.

However I don’t use Icon view in the browser (old habit) and I’ve switched off thumbnails in the timeline.

  • I’ve been working with all flavours of the XDCam codec on an 8 core for the last 18 months with only the occasional crash and this has involved large projects with 100 hours of source material and 90 minute timelines.

We have had an issue with a corrupt transcode of an XDCam clip causing crashes, once we isolated the clip all was fine. I’ve heard of other people having issues and turning off thumbnails in the timeline seemed to help.

Well you could buy a copy of Leopard off eBay and install that instead on your new machine.

Being as Sl has only just been released, I wouldn’t expect everyone to have their drivers released at the same time, nor would I be as foolish as to upgrade to a .0 release of a new OS just days after release and expect everything to go smoothly.

There is no compelling reason to upgrade yet and I certainly don’t mind waiting a couple of months or so before I do. I’m sure Sony will sort out the issue soon, until then I have a perfectly functioning system that I don’t feel the need to change
