If you are using XDCAM HD and import all of your media, log it and then want to re-capture it into another codec…

    YOU CAN’T!

FCP opens the Log and Transfer window.

    This is MAJOR error.

Anyone who uses XDCAM HD knows that Log and Transfer will not work with this media, but FCP opens it anyway. You can’t get around this at all. There’s no known work-around for this.

The ONLY solution is to go back to the old way of doing this, Log and Capture just like you would with DigiBeta or BetaSP.

    Try it… you’ll see.
    This sucks!

I am working on an XDCAM project and brought everything in through Log and Transfer with all metadata in the XDCAM codec. What exactly are you trying to do?

    XDHD? Not the EX series…

    Wayne,

I’m not clear on what you’re trying to do here. Can you explain it in a bit more detail?

    Ok…

We have lots of footage that we shot in XDCAM HD and DV (needing to be up-converted). This project will require lots of graphics to be inserted and some composited frames. XDCAM HD isn’t a great choice for this, so we decided that we would import all of the XDCAM HD media, go thru all of it (log it) and they re-digitize it into ProRes422.

Well, we are at the point of re-digitizing it, and found that the media cannot be captured into anything else except XDCAM HD. When you try to Batch Capture all of the footage, FCP brings up the Log and Transfer window. This is the problem. FCP 6.05 didn’t do this and neither did earlier versions. Problem is that XDCAM HD cannot be imported thru Log and Transfer (unless there’s something that I don’t know, yet).

One of the other guys working here did figure a work-around. You have to export a Batch List, go into Excel and manually delete all references to XDCAM and the 1440 aspect ratio. After doing this, reimport the Batch List, and THEN you can Batch Capture into ANY codec you want.

Kinda blows the tapeless workflow all to pieces, doesn’t it?

I presume you are wanting to re digitise selected material. Did you try putting that material into a sequence, Media Manage to make an offline version in Prores codec and then batch recapture?

Also why not just use compressor to convert the XDCam to ProRes. Recapture is going to take longer than batch converting files already in the system I would have thought.

You captured or logged and tranferred the original footage?

XDHD can only be acquired by log and capture or thru the Sony Transfer software program. Log and Transfer works with XD EX, P2, AVCHD, etc. But not with XDCAM HD (XDHD).

Sorry, Wayne, I am learning at your expense here, but you have log and captured, you want to recap, just like you would for tape, is that what you’re saying?

By the way, MXF4mac has a new component that supports xdcam HD (just released this week).

As for your problem, did you media manage the timeline to an offline?

not about XDCAM HD but still relevant findings

i have found that the batch recapture using sony xdcam ex material is also not ideal

it cannot find the reference like P2 material to UMID and so cannot recapture using log and transfer, making XDCAM ex useless for offline to online workflows using media manager and reconform

a lot of people edit on less than ideal machines for HD and expect to be able to work with the material helping them out isnt helped when the reconform wont work (unless dealt with like tape) and when the media manager does a poor job of downconverting material if only SD material is needing to be delivered (bad aliasing on all projects shot xdcam ex as far as I can see)

not sure if this is a rant at apple or more at the shoddy way sony deals with tapeless and over sharpening in the XDCAM ex camera

[Ben Scott] “not sure if this is a rant at apple or more at the shoddy way sony deals with tapeless and over sharpening in the XDCAM ex camera”

Sony. They hold all the cards on making XDCAM work as seamlessly and as well as P2 does from Panasonic. Remember, Panasonic doesn’t sell a competing NLE like Sony does and from what I gather, XDCAM works seamlessly with Sony Vegas editing software.

I avoid this format as much as possible because there are just too many small issue with it for me to deal with. When Sony is ready to share all their information with Apple, AJA, BMD, Matrox and anyone else working with Final Cut Pro, then I’ll be more accepting of the format.
