I know it’s an obvious question, but have you trashed your FCP prefs?

  • FCP 7 certainly works noticeably faster with XDcam material, I’m currently working on two large XDCam 50 Mbit projects and I still get very occasional crashes when scrolling through a timeline at high speed, however thats the only issue that I have. Turning off timeline icons in large sequences seems to fix the problem.

I have zero problems with renders to ProRes or playout from my BMD card.

I would recommend you upgrade, I did it mid-project with an upgrade install, not a clean one (I did clone my system drive though) and have found no problems. It might help and I don’t think it would do any harm

I’ve also noticed XDCam playback on the timeline is much improved, with the 422 codec there is no longer the slight lag that there was with FCP6

Magic Bullet Looks and Nattress filters seem to work OK as do my SATA drives

just had a mail to say my order is going to be delivered tomorrow. I’m not mid project and I’ve got a couple of new projects to start that aren’t time critical, so I guess we’ll give it a try!

It really doesn’t look like the major changes we were expecting have happened, let’s see if Snow Leopard wrings any extra speed out of it. However I have to say it looks like the biggest winners out of this latest version may be Adobe.

[Mickey Power] “BTW if I did invest in an MXO2 and used it while shooting on set to capture footage pre-compression, what perceptible advantages would I notice? I have a couple of mid-budget TVCs coming up but nothing in them requires heavy effects work and therefore a 4:2:2 space. But they would be output to Digi Betacam for broadcast.”

    I would say absolutely none.

Contrary to Walters experience, we’ve had zero problems with keying the EX3 and there are lots of great examples of how well the EX3 keys if you look hard enough on the web. You just have to shoot progressive and make sure that detail isn’t turned on.

As Rafael said, stay XDCam EX format for the keying but set your render codec to ProRes

Fantastic camera, PQ is outstanding import into FCP was easy and it cut perfectly with our EX footage, can’t recommend it highly enough!

This is an example, it’s not HD but you can see the quality even from this .wmv. The wider shot in cockpit is a standard def Sony minicam
