Do yourself a favor and preface each keying expedition with this fairly simple technique which will greatly improve your results.

This technique reduces the amount of green screen for your keyer to worry about, down to about a 25 pixel band surrounding your actor.

If you would like to build your own machine, a good place to start is at videoguys.com. They have been listing configs for editing systems that they have tested extensively for years now. I think they’re on their 8th or 9th build recommendations, and the last 2 I built followed their specs to the letter, and I’ve not had a single issue due to incompatibility.

If Cineform’s ‘Neoscene’ product is within budget, I’d opt for that. We’ve done tons of HDV conversions and Neoscene is FAST.

It’s HDV footage captured in FCP as Quicktime? What codec?

Is anyone able to duplicate this? I don’t have any ProRes footage to use, and anyway I’m on Win7, so I couldn’t compare apples to apples. Are we even sure that this is a Premiere issue, and not something else?

Dynamic Link was very sketchy for us in CS4, and again in CS5. We would lose that ability every couple of weeks or so, requiring us to re-install PPro to reinstate the capability. With CS5.5, it seems to have been corrected.
Now, more than likely the reason you lose audio on your AE render is that it defaults to the ‘Lossless’ Output Model, which does not include audio in the output. You need to edit the ‘Lossless’ model to include audio and save that as a new model.

I always like to recommend that, depending on your version of Premiere, if you have CS5 and above, you already have a VERY capable keyer built right in – Ultra Key. I find that I need Keylight these days ONLY if I have a particularly challenging key to create, and then only because I like to use Aaron Rabinowitz’s ‘Super Tight Junk Matte’, whose tutorial can be found here on the COW.

Many like to use the Avid DNxHD codec as an intermediate. The Avid codecs are a free download, and will show up under the Quicktime format.
Having said that, don’t count Cineform out. It’s a wonderful codec for editing. Be careful about Neoscene. It support a very specific range of cameras, mainly ‘prosumer’ ones, and can’t process the files from some pro cameras, like our Panasonic HMC-150. Found that out the hard way, and then had to then purchase Neo.
