    Okay – have several files.
    Largest is 1080 x 1440
    Some at 512 x 368
    and most at: 620x 352

A good view of these are taken from Youtube

I am pretty sure I have to get these to the same size or close to the same size. Is this true?
How would i do it and lastly what project settings would I then use?

I can edit stuff on the timeline but I am a total noob when it comes to setting the project up and I think thats the most important part.
    I have CS4, Encoder CS4 and Handbrake 🙂

I just want to put it all together so I can see the whole thing and not have it zoomed in on clips and massive black spaces around other clips.

    Thanks,
    Simon the Noob.

    Hi Simon,

In this case, I would make a decision as to how the final video will be delivered. If on DVD, then you would want to work in an NTSC (or PAL) sequence. For the web, then it’s your call, but again consider delivery specs.

Don’t edit as 1080 HD if you are going to deliver as 720, because you would be causing unnecessary quality loss by “blowing up” the lower-quality sources more than needed, only to scale them back down again anyway.

Because of the mix of formats and sizes, edit at the delivery resolution in my opinion.

Jeff hit the nail on the head. Edit at whatever resolution your final output will be when using mixed resolutions.

So you say “widescreen” but do you mean HD? NTSC? Something else? If it’s just a 16×9 output you’re looking for you can build a custom project size in CS4 to fit whatever specs you need or decide you want. I used to edit all sorts of things at 640×360 for web delivery as an example. Not a standard broadcast spec but it is “widescreen” or 16×9.

In CS4 I think the option for building a truly custom resolution was still listed as “Desktop” mode. Poke around the settings tab of any project preset and you’ll find the window/pull down that can give you all the options you need. It changed in CS5 and I can’t cast my memory back there to where I can say for certain what the steps are.

If it’s truly a custom resolution that’s where you want to start. I’d say build it at 620×352 and see how the other clips look scaled up/down to fit it. Everything will need to be rendered, but that shouldn’t be too bad.
