PrP CS5 Aliased video in Program monitor
Posted by Jake Mccurdy on December 14, 2011 at 8:22 pmNew to PrP after 11 years on FCP. Pretty frustrated with the UI and lots of other switching issues obviously, but this one just drives me crazy.
I’ve produced a file in AE and exported to Prores to bring back into Premiere. I would use dynamic linking but since PrP seems to take 10 times as long to render the same comp as AE does (maybe not multithreaded?) I’ve been going the output to input route. Anyway, my biggest frustration today is how it renders the full res video with aliased edges. I’ve got the playback resolution set to full for both playback and pause. See my attached still frame.
Please someone tell me this is operator error! How could I possibly embrace premiere if it can’t even display the video full res for a 720p frame on a quad core?

Can you do a screen shot of your output settings from AE?
Also, what are your sequence settings in Premiere Pro and how did you create that sequence?Kevin Monahan

December 15, 2011 at 7:01 pmHey, Kevin. Thanks for the interest. I’m including a shot of all my settings from the apps. In Pr I chose new sequence and used a RED to 720p preset to start off. Once the RED footage was cut, I imported the sequence into Ae from Ae so that I could apply effects per clip rather than global (as with dynamic linking). I don’t think it has anything to do with Ae as I use the same workflow to output ProRes as I have for years with no problems in FCP. Pr exports the footage fine, it’s just in the program monitor that it looks aliased at 100%. I find myself rechecking every graphic to make sure it’s Pr displaying improperly as opposed to an Ae export or codec problem.

December 19, 2011 at 8:58 amI don’t know why but some codecs such as ProRes looks always pixelated on my Premiere Pro CS5.5 program monitor. Although if you export it everything is still okay. On my computer Prores material pixelation goes away if I turn on fields for material. I don’t know if this is your problem but I really hope Adobe spends serious attention to Prores workflow in CS6. Maybe even license codec from Apple and do native workflow.

December 19, 2011 at 5:54 pmYes- See picture in first post. Unfortunately I just don’t think PrP is quite ‘professional’ enough for me. I don;t understand how they can get After Effects so right and PrP so wrong. Pr was the first editor I used back in 92-93′ when I was in middle school. How can the simplest things still be screwed up almost 20 years later?
I know it has a few advantages over FCP 7 but at this point after 2 projects and a whole long list of gripes I’m going to try out AVID and go back to FCP with an XML FCP to AE workflow while I test out AVID.
The simplest things are totally wrong in PrP, like loosing all progress when you cancel a render, dynamic playback quality for realtime and the totally unresponsive UI.
They’ve had so long to get this right and haven’t. In my mind that’s the biggest indicator of what they’ll do in the future which is why I’ll be going elsewhere post FCP.

December 19, 2011 at 6:09 pmBummer Jake. I know how you feel. I spent 7 years fighting Media Composer limitations when It came to integrating with third party software, then spent 10 years battling Avids lack of necessary development of the Avid DS. I hope you have a better experience with them then I did.
Did you contact Adobe Tech Support? If not ask for Vinay. He is one of the escalated tech experts and helped me solve some pretty complicated stuff in the past.
Good luck!

December 19, 2011 at 6:22 pm(Fist shaking in vain at the sky) Oh Apple, why have you forsaken us!!!! ; )
Yeah, I’ll skip tech support hell on this one. I’m just going to lick my wounds and ask FCP 7 to take me back. I can see from my time in the wild that though she’s old and developmentally challenged (as in end of life), FCP 7 is still my best bet for happiness for the near term.

December 19, 2011 at 6:51 pmI would like to see the export. While working I don’t have an issue with the program monitor not looking super clean. I want to see what I am editing and work fast and know my export comes out at quality, which I have always seen it does.
So please do a compare of the export.

December 19, 2011 at 8:40 pmIs anyone able to duplicate this? I don’t have any ProRes footage to use, and anyway I’m on Win7, so I couldn’t compare apples to apples. Are we even sure that this is a Premiere issue, and not something else?
