One of the beautiful things about the CC version is the ability to ’roundtrip’ media between the different tools. No sure of why you would want to restrict yourself to only using one tool. Why would you want to delete a clip but have it remain in your timeline? Not trying to be flippant – I’m genuinely intrigued.

Funny…I can “burn AVI’s to a DVD” all day long and they are not “of course” converted to MPEG2. Now, if I use a DVD authoring program, such as Adobe Encore, and burn THAT project to a DVD, Encore will TRANSCODE that AVI to MPEG2, but at that point I am NOT “burning an AVI to a DVD”.
Words have meanings. I read your post very carefully, I just took it literally, and wasn’t in a position to read your mind as to what you actually meant to say when you wrote it.

The DVD specification is Standard Definition MPEG2 only. Not 720p or AVI. There is no such thing as an HD DVD.

Still not what the OP is taking about. Avid and FCP can create a ‘reference file’, which looks like a normal Quicktime, but contains absolutely no video or audio, and is generally only a few K in size. Since no new media is being created, creating a 30 minute QT reference file only takes a few seconds. The reference file simply plays the original media on the timeline, complete with effects. As I said, Premiere doesn’t have this capability inherently. You can, however, achieve the same result by encoding directly from Premiere Pro through Adobe Media Encoder. If you absolutely HAVE to use a 3rd party encoder, then you will HAVE to export an intermediate file to be used in that encoder.

I think that the OP was looking for a method to not actually have to export anything, but to create a reference or signpost file. The only method to do this within Premiere, unless AFS still works, is to switch encoder to AME.

I’m guessing that you want export to a Quicktime reference file, which doesn’t create a new video file, but simply references the data on the timeline. We used to do the same in Avid Media Composer, and we used to do the same in Premiere with Advanced Frameserver, a plugin which was developed to give Premiere Pro the ability to do just what you need.

Not sure how AFS works in current versions of Premiere Pro. Also not sure if AFS will work on Macs. Probably your only option for not having to encode a full Quicktime will be to abandon iMedia converter and encode directly from the timeline with Adobe Media Encoder.

H.264 is not the correct codec for DVD. There is a specific preset for MPEG-2 DVD.
