Many tend to use the terms ‘subtitles and ‘closed captions’ interchangeably, though they are very different. However, if you have STL files, you are talking subtitles. STL is a subtitle format.
Both are editable via most subtitle editors, but as stated, can also be edited in a text editor, as long as you are very careful not to rearrange the structure or accidentally change any format tags while changing the variables of those tags. A ‘Search and Replace’ with a text editor can easily lead to this, while a subtitle editor will prevent it.

Here’s a good start…

If you’re on a Windows machine, you could also take a look at the free tool – Subtitle Workshop. If on a Mac, Jubler Subtitle Editor is good for editing CC and subtitles. Both can read and write the STL format.

Create your ‘Drop Zone’ in your comp and adjust it to your liking.
Select it’s layer.
Then Alt-drag your replacement clip from the Project Panel onto the layer in the timeline.
The new clip will inherit all scaling and filters from the original.Lot’s of tutorials online. Search for “After Effects replace footage”.

January 31, 2014 at 1:04 pm in reply to: is it possible to add a cross disssolve without adding frames???I’m pretty sure that FCP as well as any other editing program does this. If you only have handles totaling 15 frames, and you put a 30 frame dissolve there, the only way that this can happen is for the software to duplicate frames or automatically adjust the length of the dissolve for you. Perhaps PPro is just more vocal about it.

January 31, 2014 at 12:54 pm in reply to: is it possible to add a cross disssolve without adding frames???If the length of the dissolve is greater than the number of frames(handle) after the tail of the outgoing clip plus the number of frames before the incoming clip, then PPro really has no option but to duplicate frames. So yes, you can add a dissolve without this frame duplication in three ways…
1 – Shorten the end length of the outgoing clip, increasing the handle
2 – Shorten the head of the incoming clip, increasing the handle
3 – Adjust the length of the dissolve itself to match the number of actual frames available.Asus P6X58D Premium * Core i7 950 * 24GB RAM * nVidia Quadro 4000 * Windows 7 Premium 64bit * System Drive – WD Caviar Black 500GB * 2nd Drive(Pagefile, Previews) – WD Velociraptor 10K drive 600GB * Media Drive – 2TB RAID0 (4 – WD Caviar Black 500GB drive) * Matrox MX02 Mini * Adobe CC

There is! It’s the ‘Detail’ setting. Turn it off. It’s in the ‘Picture Profile’ menu.

January 27, 2014 at 4:22 pm in reply to: Reverse engineer file or recreate from scratch?Unfortunately, you’ll need to recreate. Also unfortunately, you probably don’t have the original media files – video, graphics, etc., which will make recreation problematic.

January 22, 2014 at 10:53 pm in reply to: Is there a way to cut out man with out rotoscoping using keysIf you can get a clean key of the man against his white background, you could use that matte as a track matte for the layer with the blue shape. As far as the key goes, you only really have to worry about the part where his shoulder in underneath the blue shape. The rest can be handled with a garbage matte. There are scads of tutorials here and elsewhere on using these techniques.
