is it possible to add a cross disssolve without adding frames???
Posted by Nick Natteau on January 31, 2014 at 5:41 amI’d like a add a cross dissolve without adding a single frame. I know this was possible in Final Cut Pro 7. Is it not possible in Premiere Pro CC???
Every time I add any kind of dissolve in PPCC, it seems to add frames that I didn’t want. Is there something I’m missing? I already googled this question but didn’t find anything. Just asking here because I didn’t see this question anywhere else on creativecow.
Thanks very much in advance.

January 31, 2014 at 12:54 pmIf the length of the dissolve is greater than the number of frames(handle) after the tail of the outgoing clip plus the number of frames before the incoming clip, then PPro really has no option but to duplicate frames. So yes, you can add a dissolve without this frame duplication in three ways…
1 – Shorten the end length of the outgoing clip, increasing the handle
2 – Shorten the head of the incoming clip, increasing the handle
3 – Adjust the length of the dissolve itself to match the number of actual frames available.Asus P6X58D Premium * Core i7 950 * 24GB RAM * nVidia Quadro 4000 * Windows 7 Premium 64bit * System Drive – WD Caviar Black 500GB * 2nd Drive(Pagefile, Previews) – WD Velociraptor 10K drive 600GB * Media Drive – 2TB RAID0 (4 – WD Caviar Black 500GB drive) * Matrox MX02 Mini * Adobe CC

January 31, 2014 at 1:04 pmI’m pretty sure that FCP as well as any other editing program does this. If you only have handles totaling 15 frames, and you put a 30 frame dissolve there, the only way that this can happen is for the software to duplicate frames or automatically adjust the length of the dissolve for you. Perhaps PPro is just more vocal about it.

January 31, 2014 at 3:49 pmHI Steve,
Thanks very much for your reply. I’m actually just looking to do an opacity fade really. I was hoping that there was a keyboard shortcut for fading opacity up and down without adding frames. Thanks again.

January 31, 2014 at 3:53 pmI’m assuming then by ‘frames’ you mean ‘keyframes’?

January 31, 2014 at 3:54 pmif you position your outgoing clip on a track above the incoming clip, and add a dissolve on the 1st clip, as long as it is overlapping the 2nd clip, you may get what you are looking for, though basically the same thing as a regular dissolve

February 1, 2014 at 1:13 amsingle track editing always exposes additional handles beyond you original in and out…(otherwise your run time would be affected with every transition)
If you edit track to track (say v1 and v2 for example) creating the visual desired amount of overlap between clips you wish…then add dissolves on the upper track, on the clip at it’s heads and tails
this is going to give you what you desire. I think you will tire of it quickly….but this is how it’as achieved.
In this case then, the keyboard shortcut is the same as would be used the transition in any other instance…
