We’d actually be changing back. We were an Avid house prior to switching to Premiere. Still have the dongle! It ought to be worth something.
And anyway, it’s not been only one bad experience – there have been several. Plus the stories I read here and on Adobe’s forums.
I actually don’t even feel that it’s because of the bad support, per se. That in itself can be merely a symptom of deeper issues which do not bode well for a professional that relies heavily on a particular platform.
While comparatively, I do not care as much for Avid’s interface and workflow, I remember that I never had to spend hours or days trying to troubleshoot software issues, and was never advised that a general remedy would be to uninstall/re-install every time I encountered a problem that has flummoxed “support”. However, I left during the earlier stages of Media Composer’s move toward being software based, and I do realize that Avid have worked to make many improvements.

Thanks Dennis, but as I stated in my last post, I used the Cleaner Tool after uninstalling.
Also, CC showed my install of PPro as being ‘Up to date’, although it was clearly not.
As I also said, after uninstalling, cleaning then reinstalling a 2nd time, the correct version was installed. While this opened up a whole new set of problems on it’s own, I was able to sort through those without having to resort to(shudder)another chat session with “support”.
We’re going to see how it goes for a bit, but we’re going to be looking at other solutions in the interim. We’re suffering productivity because of an influx of problems and lack of support for them.

Thanks, but the problem was that CC had installed a much earlier version of Premiere which didn’t recognize the 770’s driver version. I performed another uninstall/reinstall, and this time it installed the correct 7.2.2(33) version of Premiere, so CUDA is now available. Unfortunately, reinstalling introduces old plugin problems, necessitating a plugin cache rebuild, which then results in an activation issue making AVCHD files unsupported – again. I’m in a vicious cycle.

That could be one of the funniest things I’ve ever read on the COW!

Back when the industry was trying to give digital video a more cinematic or filmic look, the first thing we did was diffusion.

May 5, 2014 at 3:26 pm in reply to: ‘Unsupported compression type” – again. Warning – this is a rant.Soon after my previous post, I went over to the system, and started up one of the projects that had the ‘unsupported compression type’ error, and tried relinking those clips again. This time I didn’t get the error. Of course I had to relink every one of the previously ‘unsupported’ clips, and of course, every time I clicked ‘Locate’, the Locate screen opened to the exact folder that the clip was in. Seems as though while I was chatting, whatever went awry in my activation was corrected.
Now, on to Red Giant.

May 5, 2014 at 3:08 pm in reply to: ‘Unsupported compression type” – again. Warning – this is a rant. Here’s the text of my ‘support’ chat.
Devendra: Hello. Welcome to Adobe Technical Support.
Devendra: Please allow me a moment while I look into your account & verify the details.
Steve: OK
Devendra: Please Provide name and version of the product that you are using?
Devendra: Please tell me which operating system are you using? What is the version of the system?
Devendra: How much RAM do you have on your system? Which processor and graphics card are you using?
Steve: Win 7 SP1
Steve: Asus P6X58D Premium * Core i7 950 * 24GB RAM * nVidia GeForce GTX 770 * Windows 7 Premium 64bit * System Drive(Pagefile) – WD Caviar Black 500GB SATA * 2nd Drive – WD Velociraptor 10K drive(600GB) * Media Drive(Previews) – 2GB RAID0 (4 – WD Caviar Black 500GB drive) * Matrox MX02 Mini * Adobe CC
Steve: On the forums, this seems to be a common problem. It’s the 3rd time that it’s happened to me.
Devendra: Would you mind waiting for 2 – 3 minutes while I research on this issue?
Steve: No problem.
Devendra: did you create all you projects on the same machine
Steve: Yes.
Devendra: Did you moved the media from one drive to another
Steve: No.
Devendra: all you media is on network drive
Devendra: or its present locally
Steve: No. All media is on a local RAID
Devendra: Okay
Devendra: Is there any specific error message or warning that you are getting?
Devendra: when you try to open the projects
Steve: Yes…exactly as described in my initial post.
Devendra: okay
Devendra: how many project are you facing issue with currently
Steve: “The project appears to be damaged, it cannot be opened”.
Steve: I’ve only tried 3 so far. I can opened some of the Auto Saves of those projects.
Steve: But my main issue now is the ‘Unsupported Compression Type” message.
Steve: As well as the loss of the MB Looks plugin.
Steve: This was caused by deleting preferences on launching.
Devendra: so you have use Mb in all your projects
Steve: Most…yes
Steve: The plugin is presentin the correct folder location. Premiere just cannot see it.
Steve: This has happened several times.
Devendra: did you delete the Preferences or renamed it
Steve: Deleted with Shift-Alt on startup.
Devendra: Okay
Devendra: that did delete the preferences permanently
Devendra: that cannot be recovered
Steve: Here is a forum message on Creative COW where Adobe Support helped someone with the same problem…
Steve: I believe the problem is solved (at least as of the moment). The issue appears to have been tied to serialization, and the codec not being legitimized correctly. Adobe support was awesome in helping track this down, we re-serialized, and the files seem to import correctly under all users. Not sure why it was allowing my (admin) user to work correctly before. But, problem looks like it is solved.
Devendra: create a back up copy of all your projects that are currently in working states
Devendra: and contact MB
Devendra: they will help you in recovering all the looks that you have applied to the project
Steve: Usually they advise a total uninstall/reinstall of all CC products and their plugins. They state that the problem is with Adobe products, not their plugins. At any rate, this still doesn’t address the ‘unsupported compression type” issue.
Devendra: Please tell me the source of the files that you have used in the project.
Devendra: Please specify the make and model of the camera used to capture these clips.
Steve: Panasonic HMC-150.
Steve: Not all of the clips from that camera in the projects a being reported as unsupported compression type. Only some of them.
Devendra: okay
Devendra: okay
Devendra: Would you mind waiting for 2 – 3 minutes while I research on this issue?
Steve: Sure..
Devendra: the files are corrupt so you are getting the error message for the compression type
Steve: Doubtful. I can open the .mts files in other programs.
Devendra: Please tell me which operating system are you using? What is the version of the system?
Steve: As I told you…Windows 7 SP1
Devendra: sorry about that
Devendra: so as i suggested please save a back up of all the projects
Devendra: and then contact MB to get the looks back in the project
Steve: OK
Devendra: regarding the compression type nothing much can be done
Devendra: seems that the files are corruptCouldn’t take much more, so I ended the chat.

Another option, however, not a cheap one either.

Unfortunately, it’s not a post effect, it’s a shooting technique, and not a simple(or cheap) one.

April 26, 2014 at 4:27 pm in reply to: Red Giant Plugins Missing after upgraded from CS6 to CC…Unfortunately, at least in my case, this didn’t help. The plugins were installed in the correct folder, and Red Giant support actually had me place the plugins in several different folders to see if it was a case of Premiere simply not seeing the plugins in a particular folder, but no matter where the plugins were located, Premiere would not load them.
As I said, only a reinstall of Premiere then the plugins worked. This actually happened 3 times, requiring 3 reinstalls. Now it seems to have calmed for, and it’s been a few months since Premiere has lost the ability to see Red Giant’s plugins.
