[Neil Christian] “you don’t think there’s any difference between Photoshop and premier for reducing a larger format to HD, both will produce roughly the same quality 1080?”
To be honest, I wouldn’t have a clue since I’ve not done a side by side comparison – but there’s a very easy way to find out!

For what it’s worth, we import image sequences from a Canon T3i(2592×1728) and a GoPro(3000 x 2250) and edit in a 720P timeline without any problem at all. Plus, we have all of that extra space to reframe shots if necessary. I generally like to edit with the largest number of pixels possible, then do your downsize scaling on export – unless machine specs get in the way.

We’ve had the very same issue, and have abandoned MBLooks until they can get this sorted out. Had a 4 minute timeline encode overnight for 9 hours, and it still reported that it had 120 hours to go! Of course, it had actually stopped encoding, but hadn’t reported this to Premiere so that an error could be generated.
We’re using the opportunity to learn SpeedGrade. With SpeedGrade, you can put LOTS of color effects on a myriad of clips, and never get a red bar. I re-edited that 4 minute timeline, duplicating the looks that I’d had with MBLooks, and the encode time was less than 10 minutes – a bit faster than with MBLooks.

Give the two clips, video and audio their own timeline, link them together in that timeline, and use that timeline as a ‘clip’.

We were NEVER able to achieve smooth playback of AVCHD files with CS5 – always resorting to converting to Cineform for our editing files.
That being said, playback issues are usually related to drive access speed, which is why it is recommended to have your media files on a fast RAID. What are your media drive’s specs, and are the media files on a separate drive from the OS and applications?

Thanks Kevin, but it’s actually been a long standing issue, though it’s gotten much worse lately. It seems to be a problem with Magic Bullet Looks, although they can’t figure it out. At the suggestion of another COW member, I’m just going to abandon that plugin on future projects until a new version is released.

I’ve yet to dive into Speedgrade, but I’ve been meaning to. Looks like as good a time as any. Tell me, how do you handle features found in MBLooks such as diffusions and such.

Yep..it appears to be Magic Bullet Looks, which is applied to not ‘every’ clip, but several. Pulled all instances of it off, and encode takes 19 minutes.
Unfortunately, I’ve already dealt with Red Giant about Looks causing slow encodes on other projects, and they’ve not been able to determine the cause. I did some very intensive troubleshooting tests for them a few weeks ago, but can’t afford to do this any longer. I don’t get paid for troubleshooting, so it’s tough to spend so much of my time doing it.

This may not be a valid claim in all scenarios, but one of the things I’ve discovered is that in a composited shot, green screen in particular, if the lighting is really hard to match between the foreground and background, after you’ve done your best to match the basic color grade, I like to place a “Looks” type effect over everything – maybe a vignette or some sort of ‘film look’. This really seems to ‘tie’ everything together, and helps to hide the fact that it’s a composite. I love Magic Bullet Looks for this, mainly because of it’s power and ease of use.

Winsome File Renamer is a wonderful tool for mass-renaming of files.
