Hmmm. Cubic doesn’t work either? Can you upload the model file and texture?

p.s. Is this for a still or animation?

I think the issue on top of the helmet is related to the mesh there – if this helmet was started from a regular sphere you’d get that issue.

How about using UVW mapping and the texture tool to play with scale and positioning?

Can you post an image of your attempt so far? Might help to see where the problem is.

Looks like spherical mapping should work.

I have fought with this ‘juddering’ issue in After Effects for the past three years – it’s especially bad on text scrolling. There doesn’t appear to be any easy way around it other than slowing your animation down considerably (not always an option).

Using motion blur and maybe applying a slight gaussian blur (0.3 or so) to the layer/s in question can sometimes help.

  • I can’t even think of any possible scenario where I’d need a 3 hour comp in AE, to be honest…

You should probably start a new thread for that, but…

Rotoscoping would be my guess. There are lots of tutorials/info around on roto.

It also depends largely on what you mean by “foreground”. More description would help.

I had a project a few months ago that required a “newspaper” look, zooming out to reveal a full-sized image, but starting close in on a field of dots. I created the half-tone effect in Photoshop for that project, and I had to use really huge images to get the crispness I needed when zoomed in.

I remember looking for plugins at the time, but I didn’t have any luck. Perhaps you could process the footage in PS using actions?

Fill all the shelves in the fridge with cans and re-shoot?

What are you trying to achieve in the shot? i.e., why do you have 5 shots? If I’m understanding correctly, it seems that what you’re trying to do would require some sort of motion control setup. Trying to match 5 or so different camera moves to look like 1 camera move… I don’t know, that’s a tricky one.

Might be an idea to film with a locked shot straight on and see if you can fake the tilt in AE, or something like that.

I find that if you’ve recently restarted your machine, the first time you open any application (AE, PS, etc.) it will chug a bit while it opens for the first time. When you close the application, and then open it again later in the same session, the program opens quicker. I don’t know for sure, but I recall reading that this is because your RAM will hold (cached) certain data required to run the program, and so the launch is much quicker the next time.

Purge your RAM, or restart the machine, and the next time it will load a lot slower.

I experience this – but is my explanation correct? I’m not going to swear by it, but it makes sense to me… 😉

  • Tricky, for sure. You could try wrapping the objects in a different colour and mess around with keys to try to get the results you’re after, but I would think at the end of the day you’re going to be looking at a fair bit of roto.
